Franklin closes season of growth immediately looking ahead

Franklin's long high school football season came to an end Friday with the team putting up 40 points only to lose to the Sailors by one point in overtime. Scoring 40 points was a big deal given they struggled offensively most of the year with their highest point total coming in a loss to Warren where they tallied 29 points.

They scored 23 points in their only win of the season in week five agains Conneaut. The Knights ended up 1-9 overall and finished sixth Region 5.

As we have reported several times this season, this was a season of growth and heart.

And heart is what senior leadership showed this young team with folks like Autin Beatty who decided he needed to play this season no matter what.

Picture
Over last summer, a momentary lapse in judgment piloting a four wheeler around a bend almost cost Austin the chance of wearing number 62 for his senior year.

It landed him in the hospital with some broken bones in his back."I was hurting," he said but his eye was on getting back to the football field.  "There is no way I was going to miss this ."

It wasn't just his senior year or playing the sport he loves. He had another reason he wanted to be out there with his teammates. "They are my family," he said.

"I just want to see this team get better in the future. Anything I can do to help teach my young teammates to be better for next year and the year after that. I love these guys.

Picture
Picture
This is a prevailing attitude among the core group of Franklin High School students all season. They keep calling their team a family and they support each other as they learn together. Senior like Beatty showed that it isn't just about winning.

"
These boys are growing and improving every week." Coach Turk added after Saturday's overtime loss. "If this group sticks together we are going to be very good but we got a lot of work to do in the weight room."

The weight room was discussed often this season and Turk said in the locker room his kids were already asking when it will be open so they can work out.

So even though the 2021 season won't go down in the record books as one of the Knight's best season, this team hopes this season began a path towards teams that will be at the top of that list in years to come.
Picture
As for the other parts of the Franklin Knight football season, the cheer squads will now move indoors with those wanting to continue picking between the wresting and basketball programs. The band will move on to performing at the Light-up Night Parade, indoor concerts and raising funds for their trip to Washington D.C. to perform in the Memorial Day parade in the nation's capitol.
Picture
At Saturday's game,  long-time announcer Brian Said announced the turf field is scheduled for replacement with a new Knight insignia at midfield and colorful end zones. He said the current turf has served out its usefulness and this will give the football team a new field to look forward to next year.

Mercer's only score score came off a miscue on first half Maplewood drive. A fumble was picked and run back. Other than that Maplewood moved the ball methodically and put up 19 points to win and move on.

We at Eight & 322 were lucky to witness this game thanks to our friendship with The Meadville Tribune who hire us to cover this match up.

Big upset makes Maplewood a spectator for the rest of this season

Picture
Maplewood is the most successful girls volleyball program in District 10.
The Lady Tigers traditionally make a lengthy journey through the postseason.
Five of those trips, in fact, have ended with Maplewood and head coach Sheila Bancroft hoisting state championship trophies.

That won’t happen this year.

Picture
Maplewood jumped out to a two-set advantage and look well on its way to another D-10 semifinal appearance. North East had other plans, however, as the Grapepickers rallied to win the next three sets 25-22, 25-17, 15-12, respectively, to put an abrupt end to the Tigers’ season.

Maplewood ends the year at 11-6. North East is now 9-8 and moves on to face Harbor Creek in the semifinals next week.

The Huskies, ranked No. 4 in Class 2A by the Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association, left no doubt in their 25-11, 25-10, 25-12 romp over Reynolds in Wednesday’s Class 2A D-10 quarterfinals. Harbor Creek moved to 19-0 with the win.

In other action on Wednesday, Sharpsville got a scare from Girard (11-6), but survived for a 25-11, 25-13, 24-26, 25-20 win.

Corry (12-3), ranked No. 10 in the state, also got a little scare, but picked up a 25-13, 25-14, 26-24 win over Lakeview (10-7).

Corry and Sharpsville will meet in the semifinals.

The D-10 quarterfinals continue today with Class 3A action.

Warren plays Meadville at 6 p.m. at Cochranton. Fort LeBoeuf then faces Grove City. Conneaut and Villa Maria have first round byes in the Class 3A tourney.

Franklin's season ran up against a buzzsaw tonight

Picture
Seneca appears to be a pretty solid soccer team. They managed to keep the ball in Franklin's end most of the time with pin point passes. They always seemed on step or head closer to the ball and shot after shot on goal finally yielded results despite a valiant effort by sophomore keeper Reston Weismann. Weismann made a dozen or so saves before one squeaked by halfway through the first half.

The Knights just couldn't really get anything going offensively against the aggressive Bobcats. Franklin's 6-0 loss ended a pretty solid season where they won 13 of 19 games.

"From defeated to undefeated"

"Hey, hey....we're not done."

First year head coach Mike Feleppa hollered those words to his Cochranton Cardinal football squad after they defeated Saegertown 37-0 Friday on the road.
The victory capped off a perfect season for the Cardinals who were perfect in 2020 as well, but in the opposite direction.

Cochranton's program has been struggling in recent years and in 2020 they couldn't muster a single win.

Enter long-time coach from Meadville, Feleppa to take over the program. With a few key changes he turned the 0-8 Cardinals into an 7-0 squad this year. "We went from defeated to undefeated," he said to his kids as they assembled for a group photos. His 7-0 Cardinals only gave up 29 points all season and amassed 4 shutouts.

Can you say coach of the year?
Picture
Jack Martinec also broke Cochranton's single season rushing record in the win. The team truly appreciates its support system of fans, cheers and the band. At the end of each game they rush to the sidelines to stand facing them with helmets held high to salute as they stand humble and proud before them.

What a year.

Mike Stevenson saw something different about his Rocky Grove girls volleyball team very early on.
“You could just see those first two weeks,” he said. “It was a lot different starting out than in the past with teams that had talent. That has really been the biggest thing. They bought in. They supported each other.”

That the Lady Orioles certainly did.

Sure, they would have loved to put a Region 1 championship banner up on the wall of the school’s gymnasium. Sure, they don’t feel they performed up to standard with a shot at a piece of that crown on the line Tuesday night against West Middlesex.

But a second place finish in the region at 10-2 and a 12-4 overall record to cap the regular season is certainly something the program and its followers should be proud of.

Rocky Grove ended the regular season on Thursday with a 25-15, 25-11, 25-19 win over Mercer.
Statistically for the Orioles, Courtney Clark had four aces, five digs and 30 assists. Rylee Reed had three aces and seven kills. Abby Williams paced the offense with 10 kills to go along with three aces and nine digs. Paige Cresswell added three aces and seven digs. Devin Rhoads tallied two aces with nine digs; Sarah Plumer had five kills and Abby Cable has four kills.

Rocky Grove will enter the District 10 Class 1A playoffs as a team to keep an eye on. The tournament is expected to start on Tuesday. Official brackets are likely to be released over the weekend.
The favorite in the Class 1A bracket will be Cochranton, who has just a single loss on the year. That loss came against rival Maplewood in four sets. Saegertown will also be a force to be reckoned with. The Panthers’ lone losses are to Cochranton (twice), Fort LeBoeuf, Harbor Creek and Corry. Harbor Creek and Corry are ranked No. 4 and No. 10, respectively, in the Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association’s Class 2A rankings.
But definitely don’t count out the Region 1 runner-up Orioles, who will certainly show up and give it their best shot and give their community something more to be proud of.

“Our fans have been excellent all season,” Stevenson said. “And this year to have the Bird Gang back is just huge. We went last year without fans and we had really started to build some momentum with our fan base. These girls ride on that energy.”

In other action, Warren swept past Maplewood in non-region action.
Set scores were: 25-18, 25-17, 25-17.
Sadie Thomas had 18 kills and 13 digs in the loss.
