Locals had a tough time finding the net Wednesday

Toots McCall would blame it on gremlins. The long gone, self-proclaimed psychic great-aunt of the Eight & 322 photographer would explain that the only explanation for both Franklin and Cranberry girls basketball teams inability to score would be these mystical furry creatures sitting on the basketball rim swatting away their shots.

How else do explain Franklin's Camdon Bashor, who the night before dropped down 19 points not scoring until just over two minutes left in the half? And those were the first points for the entire team that only scored five the entire half - all by Bashor.

Bashor only ended up with 10 and it took the rest of the team to double that total. Harbor Creek dominated the first half and ended up winning by 25 points 45-20

Or how do you explain Cranberry only scoring nine points total in the game? Only three in the first half. The tournament host lost to Keystone 35-9.

The night before Cranberry scored 28 points but  lost to Franklin 51-28

Gremlins can only be the explanation, nothing else really makes sense at all.

Franklin is relentless

Rocky Grove hung in there through the first half of their Tuesday night road game at Franklin. Somewhere in the middle of the third quarter suddenly Rocky's shots weren't falling and Franklin's were, and if they weren't the Knights proved they can indeed get offensive rebounds. In the end the Knights won comfortably 66-40

Franklin and Rocky Grove to meet Tuesday in Christmas tourney

Rocky Grove had to come from behind to take down North Clarion while Franklin once again cruised to an easy win over Clarion- Limestone. The two squads will meet Tuesday in Franklin at 7:30 p.m. This cross town match up will be for bragging rights around town for a little while.

The Grove will have to find a way for corral Easton Fulmer who had a career game Monday. But the Knight's have so many weapons its hard to know if that would even be enough.

Rocky can slow the pace of a game down with their proven patience and methodical ball movement until something opens up, but Franklin's size and quickness will surely test the Orioles ability to stay calm and focussed.

It should be a fun game to watch. Below are more photos from Monday's action. And you can visit even more by clicking here.

"Get the ball to Easton!"
"He's covered."

"Then get the ball to Damon."
"They're doubling him."

"Where's Guth?"
"On the other side of the court!"

"Oh just shoot it then Jalen"

Franklin has so many weapons.

And when they are firing on all cylinders you just start feeling sorry for the other guys.

Over 60 first half points Tuesday against Greenville meant the JV kids got some playing time.

If it wasn't for the running clock they easily would've made it to 100. With JV playing a good part of the fourth they still managed 92.

Jason Fulmer's squad gets a couple days off during Christmas but will be back to host a tournament on the the 27th and 28th playing Clarion Limestone and Rocky Grove.
Fulmer is challenging his team by getting some challengers from Pittsburgh sprinkled in they conference/non-conference local schedule.

They took on and beat Alaquippa over the weekend.

This teams looks to make a splash and hopefully a deep run this year.

Rocky Grove seemed content to hold onto a small lead in the fourth quarter and it nearly bit them in the buttocks. They gave up the ball late twice but managed to hold on the 45-42 win in the end..

Below are several action photos from their visit up 322 a spell to Cochranton. And you can visit even more photos at t https://sayerrich.zenfolio.com/p1005909500

Oilers fall in OT to MASH

12/17/2021

If you were to cut a Christmas tree at 5'8" and asked Jack Burchard to stand next it, I'm pretty sure he'd have to look up at the star on the top. But the freshman is listed at that height on the roster so that's where we'll go from here.

Arguably the littlest dude on the hardwood floor of the House of Hustle Friday, he found all five foot, ahem, eight inches of him in a very big spot.

With ball in handle went into the air and floating into the lane he tossed up the game winner with only about a second left on the clock.

64-62 in overtime.
Picture

Picture
Regulation ended tied at 57 in a game that saw the lead change frequently and no one really pulled out to take command. It was a solid evenly matched game.

A lot of fouls were called on Meadville and if Oil City converted more of their free throws, the game could've been a bit different. Coach Bundy Fulmer might consider a two-hour practice of nothing more than working on shots from the line.

MASH coach Mark McElhinny will be working on how his kids can avoid cheap fouls so when bad calls are made late in the game, less of his top players will foul out.

Picture
And there were some questionable calls and a few more questionable no-calls.

But this was a solid game and exciting to watch.

Franklin hosted Farrell to get season kick started

Someday I'll learn, go a half an hour to photograph swimming, take a towel, don't wear a sweatshirt and use anti-fog lens cleaner on my glasses right before going into the pool area.

Oh and just relax that the color is going to be funky and that most of my pics will just look cooler in Black and White.

Farrell only had a handful of swimmers so it was a easy win for Franklin, but they swan and worked on their form and gave the Farrell swimmers who did participate a chance to get in their reps as well.

So next time I decide to check out a swim meet I'll be a little better prepared I hope, or I'll do what I did tonight, shake my head and stumble around blindly as I pull out the bottom of my t-shirt and do the best I can to get the condensation wiped off the equipment and pray the lens clears.

Lady Orioles are 2-0 and the Sanner Tip-off champions

Senior Williams named tourney MVP
The score was tied at 27. Rocky Grove had the lead most of the game, but Oil City made a real game of it.

Rocky Grove took the ball into their end and got off a shot that missed, a scramble for the ball and Emily Rice came up with it as the time wound out.

The final buzzer and referees whistle seemed simultaneous.

Rice had been fouled.
The scrappy sophomore then went to the line and awaited the referees to discuss whether there was time left or not.

Finally the teams, sans Rice, were sent to the bench. The game came down to whether she could make a free throw.

Then Emily "ice in the veins" Rice drained it.

Look at the top photo of tournament MVP Abby Williams' reaction.

This was huge. Not only did they win the Roy Sanner Tip-off Tournament, they have started the season 2-0.

The Lady Oriole's have had some rough years in recent memory struggling to win any games at all. And here they start out winning a couple from local rivals Cranberry and Oil City.

And a survey of school officials, principal Kelly Hart, athletic director Curt Bindas and coach Ken Brannon, yielded no definitive answer as to whether or not the girl's program has ever won this tournament. Even a call to longtime local sports writers couldn't answer the question without digging into the archives.

Suffice to say, if this isn't the first time they have won their home tip-off tourney, it has certainly been a long time.
Picture
"God bless these kids, they worked so hard and they listen to us," said Brannon, who was walking around the gymnasium with a smile on his face.
