Brayden McFetridge upset top seeded Troy Peterson and Dalton Wenner defeated a tough Sierra Chiesa to take the top spot on the podium in the 215 and 107 weight brackets and help the Cranberry (combined with Oil City) squad finish fourth at the highly competitive Fred Bell Wrestling Tournament in Grove City. McFetridge earned the win with a last-second takedown and back points that ended the match with an 8-5 victory over defending champion Peterson of McDowell. The upset gained loud applause for the Oil City High School senior who typically wrestles in the 189 weight class. With the win, McFetridge finished 5-0 in the tournament, including three pins. He is 22-4 on the season. Wenner, who was tournament number one seed at 107, lived up to expectations winning the weight class with a 13-3 decision over Chiesa of Northwestern. Wenner recorded first period pins against all his other opponents on the weekend, ending with a 5-0 record. The freshman is now 20-2 on the season. Elijah Brosius squeaked out a 3-2 win over Grove City's hometown kid Hudson Hohman to earn third place at 121. It was redemption for the sophomore from Oil City who dropped a 3-1 match to Hohman in the quarterfinals earlier Saturday. Brosius was 6-1 in the tournament, including two pins. He is 21-6 on the season. Also earning podium places were Dane Wenner with fourth place at 139; and Conner Rezkowski with sixth at 133. The AA Cranberry team earned 159 points on the weekend to come in fourth. The top three teams in the tournament were all AAA squads - Trinity, 176.5; Pine-Richland 173.0; and Erie McDowell 160.5. Cael Dailey defeated Jack Darlington of Penns Valley 8-1 in the third place 114-pound match to become Franklin's highest finisher and only medalist on the weekend. Franklin combines with Rocky Grove. Dailey, a sophomore from Rocky Grove, lost his first match of the tournament but wrestled his way back to the bronze level bout with two pins, a major decision and two decisions. He finished 6-1 in the tournament and is 25-3 on the season. As a team, Franklin finished in the middle of the pack at 25 with 60 points. |
Titusville had a decent showing on the weekend with four medalists and a 10th place finish out of 41 teams.
Trenton Rodgers and Brock Covell earned fourth places in the 133 and 172 weight classes respectively. Rodgers had a 4-3 decision over Brendan Orr of DuBois in the consolation semifinals to make it into the third place bout but lost 3-0 to Jonathon Bissell of Sharpsville. He was 5-2 in the tournament with one pin. He is 21-5 on the season.
Covell pinned Jordan Butler of Bishop McCort in 2:46 to move on from the consolation semis. He was pinned by last year's District 9 and NW AAA regional champ Waylon Wehler of St. Mary's to end the tournament in fourth place. Covell was 4-2 on the weekend with all his wins coming from pins. He is 24-4 on the season.
Gavin Donaldson was seventh at 145 and Sawyer Wolfkiel was eighth at 107.
Hunter Gould was Crawford County's only representative in the finals round of the competition. He struggled to keep up with the rapid catch and release pace of Jax Forrest of Bishop McCourt and had to settle for the silver after an 18-8 loss in the 127 division.
Gould, who was seeded second coming into the tournament, earned his spot in the finals by handily defeating Alex Rueberger of Sharpsville with a 16-1 technical fall in 4:27 minutes in the championship semifinals. Gould was 4-1 on the weekend with two pins and two technical falls. He is 21-2 on the season.
Fellow CASH wrestler Collin Hearn won third place at 160 after Zeke Dubler of Glendale forfeited due to injury. Hearn qualified for the match by logging a 2-1 decision in a second tiebeak round with Caleb Butterfield of McDowell in the consolation semifinals.
Gunnar Gage was the top finisher for Spa, taking third place with a 13-5 decision on Jaden Wehler of St. Mary's in the 145 weight bracket. Brody Beck was Cambridge Springs' other medalist, finishing eighth in the 133 weight class.
Cochranton's Kyle Lantz finished third place with a 4-0 decision over Adkia Fiscus of Warren in the 107 bracket. Lantz was 6-1 on the weekend, including four pins.
Meadville had three medalist, including Jacoby Thompson with fifth place at 139; Ty Tidball with sixth at 189; and Ryder Say with eighth at 145. The team placed 15th overall with 93 points.
