From its inception in 2020, Eight & 322 has been a platform for community storytelling. In doing so, we found ourselves covering a wide range of topics - chief among them arts, community events and sports.
This past year, we had a vision of how to take this storytelling to another level through the creation of a print project that would first feature items pertaining to the art scene of Oil City. Through ARTS Oil City we were given a Creative Ventures Grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts to make this possible and to facilitate our belief that the survival of community journalism relies on the attitude of collaboration. The grant allowed Eight & 322 to collect and distribute stories, repair necessary equipment and software to begin a publication, and move forward with projects promoting the local arts scene. Through the grant we’ve collected many stories and shared them with regional news outlets with success. Multiple publications, whether online or print, shared stories of Oil City art endeavors over the last six months. This magazine is the first of what we hope becomes a series of more in depth publications.
We would like to create a directory of creatives in hopes to further collaboration and give resources to area artists and patrons of the arts. Starting on Page 8, we have listed regional resources from art supplies to exhibition spaces. In a future edition, these listings will be expanded to include artists, creating a comprehensive guide.
