see that sky?
I painted that for you today
It came to me in a horse bridled in innocence,
It came to me swiftly on wings of steel,
It came into my mind with the water running over the rocks,
It appeared in the stars moving up the sky.
it came to me with in the sound of a branch breaking in the wind,
It came to me with the start of a motorcycle engine three blocks away and scream of a girl trying to get away,
It came to me in a roadside sign with three flies on it,
it came to me with high beams coming against me on the narrow dirt road,
it came to me in a glimmer of an eye I photographed not long ago...
and lips,
It came to me in spring and it came to me in winter,
It came to me in the backseat of a 1972 Volkswagen Beetle.
it came to me in a glimpse hot pink underwear in a celebrity photo,
It came to me in a flag waving tea party type,
it came to me in a monks chant,
Or an NRA slogan on a rusty old pickup,
It came to me as a philosophy,
it came to me as a fact, and also as an opinion,
it came to me as a fish was jumping in the river and a blind duck was swimming upstream,
it came to me with the Daffodil poking up through the dead leaves,
It came to me with the fever that comes from freshly mowed grass,
It came to me with history’s steel bridges on roads (you can’t burn steal bridges, I thought)
It came to me in smoke rings from a fire off in the distance and pearls around the neck of an old rich woman,
it was up past my bedtime and before I arose.
it came to me on my day off....
so I painted it...
for you
