Franklin falls short in comeback bid

Getting base runners, extra bases, and not getting key outs because of balls popping in and then out of gloves was a key in Franklin getting far behind in their opening round 11-8 playoff game loss against Conneaut Tuesday.
Picture
The Eagles added four more in the bottom of the third to take an 8-0 lead.

Boland got Franklin on board in the fourth with a rocket over the left field fence with a runner on base.

In the fifth  Kirsten Hicks , Autumn Fitzgerald and Swartz had RBI's to bring the game to within string distance. A fielder's choice scored a fourth.

Down 8-6 things were looking up.

Then they gave up three more in the sixth.

Down 11-6 Kirstin Hicks tried to get things started with a homer, and her "c'mon" yell as she made her way around third in her homer trot seamed to ignite the Knights. Riley Hanna got on base and was promptly plated by Boland's single to left. They got more runners on base but  after an interference call they lost momentum and couldn't get the runners home.

The 11-8 game ended Franklin's season.

In the first inning CASH got the bases loaded after a fly ball was dropped and an infield hit. They doubled scoring two.
A routine ground was in and out of the first baseman's glove. Another pop foul made it into the pit, but somehow bounced back out.
Franklin's struggle with the gloves ended up accounting for four first inning runs.
Picture
Pitcher Jersey Swartz was keeping the Eagles bats from blasting them for the most part, but Conneaut took advantage of every miscue.

Franklin's bats were also slow to get going with the first two innings failing to produce a baserunner.

In the third the Knights finally got a couple runners on base but good CASH defense shut them down

PHOTOS: CASH too much for Knights

Despite a little long ball by the Knight's Kirstin Hicks and Abby Boland, the Knights just couldn't bounce back to catch Conneaut in the opening round of the playoffs.
Picture
Early in the contest the Knights has a case of the dropsies and just couldn't seem to squeeze the ball in the glove. This led to Conneaut jumping out to a 3-0 in the first. They added another in the third while Franklin's hard hit balls were always directly at a Conneaut player.
Picture
Finally, in the fourth Abby Boland got a hold of one sending a two-run homer over the left field fence. But by tat time the Eagles were already up to eight runs.

The Knights had a solid fifth-inning where they plated three more., but still not enough

Epic finish comes up short for the Orioles

Having been mostly out-played, out-thunk and out-hustled all game by the Iroquois Braves, the Rocky Grove Orioles went into the seventh inning of the opening round of the District 10 playoffs down 5-2.

What was about to happen turned this fairly ordinary one-sided game into one of the ages.

Paige Cresswell led off doing what was needed if they were going to come back - she laced a double into the outfield.

Raelynn Montgomery then took one to the body and the Orioles had two runners on with no outs.

Zoe Cresswell drilled one at the shortstop who couldn't handle it and all of a sudden, with no outs, the Orioles were in business.

A strike out seemed to stall the effort but then Kaylin Jacoby found the centerfield grass and with a throwing error two runs scored.

Down only one now, Jillian Cratty laid down a solid bunt that was fielded cleanly, but the throw was off the mark and it let to two more runs scoring and the Orioles taking the lead 6-5. But that's all they scored after a base running error ended the inning.

They put themselves in the position to win, but Iroquois had another at bat.

And they wasted no time. Three solid hits to the outfield in a row led to two runs, the last coming off Karina Reichard's double to end the game 7-6.

Elizabeth Mawhinney was the starting pitcher for the Orioles and Paige Cresswell came in in the third inning. Iroquois left several on base as the Rocky Grove pitchers hunkered down only giving up five runs through the first six innings.

Base running and mental errors are what ultimately  cost the Orioles. A pick off at third on a bunt, getting caught in a pickle between second and third on a sac fly RBI and then being picked off at second lackadaisically to end to seventh.
Picture
A couple passed balls as well allowed runs to score. The Orioles were right there, neck and neck with the Braves and just inches away from advancing and keeping their season going. They ened a couple games under .500. Iroquois advances to face the top seed Cambridge Springs in the district semis.
Picture
Early in the game the Orioles were giving Iroquois runs. A fielding error in right center led to a throwing error. A passed ball later an Iroquois was up 2-0.

The Grove bounced back. Paige Cresswell reached base after being drilled by the Iroquois pitcher. Montgomery than singled to right scoring Cresswell.

Then Iroquois countered, again aided by errors. They scored three more to take a 5-1 lead.

In the fifth-inning Zoe Cresswell singled and after a walk they had two runners in scoring position.
A sacrifice fly plated one, but the second runner was caught in a pickle that ended the inning.
Picture
Picture
Picture
Cresswell pitched well down the stretch keeping the Braves close, but the bottom of the seventh was just too much and Braves jumped on early pitches and drilled them to end the Rocky Grove season.

Franklin
Senior Caleb Prettyman earned three individual first-place medals and anchored a winning relay team to lead the Franklin Knights to take the team title at the District 10 AA Track and Field Championships Saturday in Slippery Rock.

Franklin boys earned 13 medals on the day and scored 88 points, easily beating out second-place Slippery Rock High School which had 73.

Prettyman had a hand in 40 of those points. He handily won the 800, 1600 and 3200 races, all of which he was ranked the top runner entering the competition.
He also ran the final leg of the winning 4X800 relay. Joining him in the race were Jay Prettyman, Gauge Gierlach and Easton Adamczyk.

The Prettymans gave the one-two punch in the 1600 as Jay earned the silver and the right to join Caleb at states.  Adamczyk completed the team’s trio of medalists in the 1600, taking fifth. He also earned a fifth place in the 800.

Bryson Watson overcame a rough start falling early in the preliminaries, but still managing a third place finish in the 110 hurdles. He then cruised to a second place finish  in the finals to qualify for states. Watson also ran a qualifying time in the 300, where he finished third.

Freshman Logan Knight was also on the podium twice for Franklin.
He was third in the discus and fifth in the shot put.

Rounding out the day’s scoring was Landon Lynch, who earned a sixth-place finish in the javelin.

For the girls team, Nadalie Latchaw and Isabelle Griffin both qualified for states. Latchaw took second in the 3200 and Griffin finished fourth with a state qualifying time in the 1600.

Olivia Rondinelli was Franklin’s only other medalist, earning third place in the high jump.

Oil City
Ethen Knox was the big winner for Oil City, taking the District 10 title in the discus and clocking top three finishes in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes. Knox also anchored the state qualifying 4X100 relay team, which finished fifth on the day.

There was tough competition in the sprints, the 100 in particular. All eight medalists in the 100 qualified for the state competition by turning in a time faster than 11.25.

Knox and teammate Devaughn Griffin were two of those qualifiers. Griffin earned a seventh-place finish in the 100, as well as in the 200 later in the day.

Knox and Griffin were joined by Drayton Dill and Steven Heise in the 4x100 relay.

Also medaling for Oil City was Elijah Brosius, third in the 3200; Sayyid Donald, third in the triple jump; Sawyer Cavalline, fourth in the high jump; Braylon Barber, fifth in the javelin; Jacob Wenner, sixth in pole vault; and Keegan Kirkwood, eighth in the 1600 and the 3200.

Freshmen Addison Wyant and Corbel Shiley were double medalists for the girls team. Shiley was fourth in the 3200, and Wyant finished fifth in the 800. They were joined by Olivia Vorse and Isabella Vorse for an eighth-place finish in the 4x800 relay.

Kallie Smith tied for seventh place in the high jump to round out Oil City’s medalists on the day.

Titusville
Landen Wolfkiel found redemption in the 300 hurdles and Aaron Burrows took home an unlikely gold medal as Titusville qualified two athletes for the state track and field championships.

Wolfkiel started the day with a strong showing in the boys 110-meter hurdles. His fourth-place finish earned him a spot on the podium, but his time was just shy of the state mark. He bounced back in the 300 hurdles.

While the senior Rocket finished fourth again, he clocked a 39.94, good enough to beat the 40.80 mark needed to move on to the next level of competition.

He will be joined in Shippensburg by Burrows who took the top spot in the 400, in only his second time running the race - he ran it for the first time last week qualifying for districts.. Burrows also earned a medal in the 200, finishing fifth.

Wolfkiel and Burrows were also members of the 4x400 relay, which finished sixth. David Leonard and Joe Herman rounded out the relay team.
Lane Ongley was also a double medalist for Titusville, finishing fifth in the discus and seventh in the shot put.

Sophia Sampson, Isabella Ongley, Anna Mehlenbacher and Mackenzie Covell combined for the Titusville girls top finish on the day, taking fifth in the 4X800 relay.

Covell also scored an individual medal, taking seventh in the 400. Sampson also had a return visit to the podium with an eighth-place performance in the 800.

America's game

When I was a kid it was all baseball all the time. I grew up with it being called America's pastime. I thought it was primarily just played in this country and some international players were anomalies.  I found later that it really is a world game and we're really seeing that now. I would still love to see Cuban baseball being played and I think it's time the World Series is more akin to the World Cup.

Like every sport, it seems the level of the game has gone down, but the level of the athlete has perhaps gone up? It could be argued hitters were better back in the days of DiMaggio, Williams and Mantle, but it could also be argued they batted against pitchers with much more tired arms.

Either way, it sure is fun watching some players today and it's too bad it doesn't get the attention other sports do.
