Rocky Grove coach Josh Beightol said that by the time the sun rose on Saturday he was already drenched all the way through to his skivvies. He and others were up before dawn setting up for the annual Rocky Grove Cross Country invitational.

This event drew in over 40 schools and well over 1,000 runners to traverse the picturesque (and soggy) Two Mile Run County Park course, the home of the Rocky Grove Orioles. Local runners fared well among the large crowd at competitors who started the day clean, but ended very, very muddy, especially the last racers of the day.

Nadalie Latchaw of Franklin won the girl's varsity contest to earn the highest placing among all the Venango County runners. She logged a time of 21 minutes, 22 seconds. She barely seemed winded as she crossed the finish line a full eight seconds ahead of Warren's Katie Beyer.

Kennedy Liderbach of Oil City finished fifth among the 185 racers.

Cranberry had three runners earn top 20 finishes: Kayla Hanna, eighth; Kelsey Hanna, 11th; and Karleigh Shaffer, 18th. Meadville's Camryn Guffey tied Hanna for eighth.

Titusville took the girl's team honor with all five runners finishing in the top 35. Lakeview took second place among the 20 schools sporting  a full squad. The Cranberry team was third, a feat they repeated in the boy's varsity race.

Cranberry's Matt Woolcock edged out Oil City's Jack Mumford by one second to win second place out of 244 runners in the boy's varsity race. They couldn't keep up with Coudersport's Kevin Sherry.

The Rocky Grove duo of Ethan Knapp and Evan Wolfgong took 11th and 12th places to help their team finish in second place overall.

Other local top 20 finishers were Kyler Wollstrum of Cochranton, eighth; Christian Miller of Cranberry, 19th; and Elijah Brosius of Oil City; 20th. Franklin's top finisher was Cael Ziegler at the 22nd spot.

In the junior high competitions, Dalton Wenner of Cranberry won the boy's race and Keegan Kirkwood finished third. Danica Wenner was the top local runner in the girl's competition, earning third place.

It was a wet morning, for spectators and photographers, but it could've been far worse. During the first three races the rains were mild making it bearable to keeping equipment and body dry-ish.
