Symbolism and meaning.
In northwest Pennsylvania there is no shortage of support for President Trump. The evidence is everywhere. culturally, politically and ideologically, this corner of the state has the president's back.
A couple weeks ago I made a photograph less than 10 miles away from this image above taken today in Meadville (see below). It depicted a fairly new Trump 2020 flag beneath a severely weather beaten American flag. I posted the photograph without any opinion and just asked for thoughts.
And a few were given - mostly about how the American flag needed to be replaced. A couple folks talked about the symbolism depicted and some stated its every American's right to support who they wish to support.
It was a good discussion.
I drove by it again two days ago and there is now a crisp clean American flag flying in its place. I wondered if someone took out a new flag to the owner after seeing my post(I have a number of patriot friends on social media), the owner saw the post and hadn't realized how bad the flag had gotten or if it was all just coincidence?
I'm interested in finding out anyway.
Today I'll offer the same chance to give thoughts on the photograph above without offering any of my own. I'm interested in how this place we live thinks.
I didn't stop to chat with the family about this, though I'm interested in what the confederate battle flag means to folks here in the north.
How people choose to represent themselves through symbols is always interesting to me as a storyteller.

It is possible the flag owner has Southern roots, and certainly the Civil War had proponents on both sides. I am not in favor of removing statues of Confederates, they are a reminder that our history as a nation was not always as seamless as elementary school texts make it appear. However, flying the CSA battle flag 155 years after the war's end seems to me to be making a statement that the owner would like to roll back all the societal progress made in that time. Or maybe, we just didn't progress as much as I would like to believe.
