Oil City High School's cafeteria was full of some of the brightest minds and dedicated students the school has during its induction ceremony for the National Honor Society.

Friends and family attended the small ceremony that featured a speech from OC alum and honor society member Matt Laverde, who told a few tales of what the core values of the society gave him in his life's journey.

To be eligible for the society a student must maintain an 85 average or higher GPA, volunteer in school or community. demonstrate leadership skills and demonstrate high standards of character and maintain a clean disciplinary record.

Oil City principal Scott Stahl told those in attendance that these 26 individuals do just that.

I wanted to attend this event Wednesday afternoon because I find myself, as do most news organizations, spending more time covering the athletic accolades of students and not enough time covering their academic achievements.

A funny conversation with superintendent Lynda Weller before the ceremony caught me trying extract my foot from my mouth. She quickly put me in the right. I said "I really wanted to come and cover the smart kids." And she reminded me that athletes can be smart too.

Touche' Lynda.

So I had fun making photos of the honorees coming into the cafeteria for this ceremony and sticking around a little while as family and friends proudly posed for photos with the new society members.

Sometimes we forget about the accomplishments of the brain that go unseen outside the walls of institutions. So it is nice to take a few moments to acknowledge the important but quieter moments of our kid's education.

What the HSE Will Not Cover:

Cosmetic Procedures: Cosmetic surgery is generally not covered unless it is medically necessary (e.g., reconstructive surgery after an accident or medical condition).

Elective Surgery in Turkey: If you choose to receive elective surgery in Turkey without it being medically necessary or unavailable in Ireland, the HSE is unlikely to approve reimbursement.
