In all likelihood I was there on September 20, 2014, though I don't remember. For 17 years I was on the sidelines for the majority of Allegheny College home football games. For many years they were a pretty solid team having either winning records or at least 50-50 seasons.
Of late however they have struggled. On Sept 20, 2014 they won that game and haven't tasted that gratifying feeling again.
Until Oct. 1, 2016.
That is why I was there. I'm not an alum, I did teach there for a spell, but I wasn't a student there. The college hired me to cover homecoming.
Since they hadn't won yet this season, went without a win last year and only won one game the year before in the very beginning of the season, I wasn't really expecting it to be a very good game or an extremely happy crowd. Since I was working for the college they weren't really interested in in storytelling photos that showed loss.
"Somebody's gonna get a win today," they said.
They scored right away!
And the crowd did their part to keep up the support.
Years ago I remember coving an Allegheny team who struggled in their first four games, but went on to win the conference and go into the playoffs. I even went to NJ to cover them play in a very good game that ended in a last second, very long field goal that bounced on the cross bar and over the goal post ending the Gators run.
I wouldn't mind another road trip to NJ.
