In the fourth, Franklin outscored Meadville 20-14 to secure the win.
Franklin led most of the way in a bit of a sloppy affair against visiting Meadville. The Knights managed to hold on for a 59-53 win in a game where the referees' whistles seemed to almost drown out any cheers from the crowd. Franklin led 18-12 at the end of the first quarter but was only ahead by one, 29-28, at the half despite being up by nine at one point in the second. It was pretty much back and forth after that with a slow third quarter that saw both teams only managing to score a combined 21 points. The third ended in a tie at 39.

It didn't take long for the Franklin girls basketball team to score enough points to secure victory over the Titusville Rockets Monday night. Before the end of the first quarter they had plenty.
The visiting Knights jumped out to a lead early while the Rockets took nearly the entire first quarter to score its first points. By the end of the first quarter the Rockets had only found the net once. By half-time they only added two-more free throws. Those came around halfway through the quarter. Franklin scored 33 points before they headed into the break. Franklin harrassed the Rockets stealing to ball over and over again. The mercy clock was in effect most of the second half. Titusville's Riley McGarvie scored five in the third quarter. She scored all but two of the Rockets points. They held Franklin to 18 second half points with the running clock and the bench getting a lot of time. The Oilers were drawing threes and passing the ball efficiently in the first half to take a 10-point lead into half-time. They then just kept it going in the second half beating Brookville 67-53 to remain undefeated on the season.
In cooperation with our friends at the start-up Titusville News-Journal, we wrote and photographed a bit for them as we covered the tip-off tournament down in Rocky Grove. Last weekend the Titusville basketball program elected to tip-off its season with a trip down Route 417 to participate in the annual Roy Sanner tournament hosted by Rocky Grove High School. This was the first look at both Rockets squads in game action. The girls fired out hot against the host Orioles, easily taking down the inexperienced squad 46-16 behind the stellar play of Brooke Anthony and Jewel Wakefield. The win put them into the tournament championship which, unfortunately for the Rockets, turned out to be a buzzsaw in the waiting. The Oil City girls were coming off a decisive victory over Cranberry Friday night in the other opening round game of the Sanner tourney. The Oilers punished the Berries 53-27.
On the boys side, the Titusville Rockets’ aggressive offense was met by an equally aggressive Rocky Grove team. It seemed things were going right early for the Titusville with the Orioles getting into immediate foul trouble and two of their starters benched early with two fouls each. But in stepped Freshman Landen Carter, playing like a senior, to lead the Orioles through the early foul trouble. Carter ended up with 17 points off the bench. Titusville’s Isiah Colon and Manny Perez paced the Rockets scoring 37 of the team's 50 points. The Rockets made a valiant effort at a comeback in the fourth quarter dropping a 15-point deficit down to seven but were unable to get any closer, dropping the contest 67-50 in the end. The Rockets rebounded the following afternoon with a running clock blowout over Maplewood in the consolation game. Manny Perez was named to the all-tournament team for his two-day effort. Both the girls and the boys finished 1-1 on the opening weekend as they get ready for the season. The boys played hard again Tuesday taking down the Saegertown Panthers in a 86-79 shootout. They will now take their 2-1 record north to face Girard on Friday. The girls will also be away Friday against Sharon but will host Franklin Monday night.
Franklin girls did everything they could in the first half just to stay within swinging distance of Slippery Rock Tuesday night at home. At the end of the first half they were only down five points.
Coming out of the half coach Ryan Justice's squad was a different team. They erased that lead in a matter of seconds and began building a lead themselves. They stayed ahead most of the second half. Up four with about a minute and a half they held on to the ball eating clock. For some reason Slippery Rock didn't foul until near the end. The Knights held on to win 42-38 to secure their second victory of this short season. The weekend started a little rough for Rocky Grove senior D'Andre Whitman. On Friday night, only a couple of minutes into the game, he found himself heading to the bench with two quick fouls. His fast and furious pace was a little out of control and it cost him. In fact, the whole team seemed plagued by foul trouble. But Whitman never fouled out and contributed 15 points by the time the final buzzer sounded. He followed up the next day with a much more in-control effort, dominating in all aspects of the game, recording several blocks and rebounds, and even dishing the ball off to his teammates to score easy buckets. He finished with 26 points and a Player of the Tournament plaque for his trophy case. The Orioles defeated Titusville on Friday and Cranberry Saturday to win the Roy Sanner tip-off tournament. Their aggressive play proved too much for both opponents. The Grove employed a half-court press that frustrated Cranberry and allowed the Orioles to pull away for an easy win 65-38.
The Titusville score Friday was closer and the game ended at an official score of 65-50. (The earlier reported score reflected what was displayed on the scoreboard at the end of the game 67-53). Grove got a big unexpected surprise when, in foul trouble, they put in freshman Landen Carter who lit it up playing solid on both sides of the call and dropping in 17 points. Blayne Baker also contributed 17. Carter also got plenty of minutes on Saturday scoring a handful of points Below are more photos from Saturday's game with Cranberry. In stark contrast to last year's opening-round games, the Oil City girls looked season ready to tip off their 2022-23 campaign. On Saturday they rolled over Cranberry 53-27 to kick off the Roy Sanner tournament at Rocky Grove High School. They then returned the following day to steamroll a Titusville team, who the night before easily defeated the Orioles, the defending champions of the tournament. The 56-8 win allowed their bench to get some playing time and gave the team a title and momentum going into the regular season, which is expected to start Friday at home against Brookville.
Editor's Note: Story updated to corrected an error, Quinn Rickey apparently was not flagged with a technical foul at the end of the game as previously noted.
