The District 10 basketball playoff brackets are out and several local teams are in the mix. Top-ranked Franklin (18-4) will play Seneca (7-15) at 7:30 p.m. Friday, February 23, at Oil City High School to kick off their run at the 3A boys D10 championship. Oil City (16-6) comes in at the opposite end of the bracket as the number three seed, setting up for the potential of another Route 8 Rivalry game in the District 10 championship. First step towards that goal will be beating Fairview (8-14) in a 7:30 p.m. game at Meadville High School on Friday, February 23. The Franklin girls (14-6) are ranked fifth in class 2A and will meet Conneaut (15-17) for a Region 5 showdown game at 4 p.m. Saturday at Meadville High School. The Eagles were victorious in both of their earlier matchups this season, winning 43-26 and 46-35. The Rocky Grove girls (7-15) will play in a 1A semi-final matchup against Jamestown (5-15) on Wednesday, February 28 at an undetermined time and location. The two teams played each other near the start of the season with the Orioles beating the reigning 1A champs 47-45. There are first-round byes for all the 1A boys basketball teams, so Rocky Grove (15-7) will wait until Tuesday, February 27 to meet up with Cochranton (9-12) at a time and place to be determined. The Orioles played the Cardinals earlier this season, beating them 84-66. |

Franklin posted a 13-point run in the fourth quarter to secure a 38-18 runaway victory over Venango County rival Oil City in Region play Thursday night. The two teams were close after one quarter at the House of Hustle, as Franklin had a slim lead of 8-6. The Knights outscored the Oilers 9-3 in the second.
The Oilers fell to 8-12 on the year and will end their season with a mini road trip with Conneaut Area on Monday and Meadville on Thursday.
That may have been a slight fib, but not by too many years. I do remember photographing him very young coming up the ranks of local wrestling. This was fun for me to see some folks I've known for a long time and it is fun to see good people from the past still doing what they love doing. And I am lucky also, to still be doing what I love.
File photo from earlier in the season.
Cole Buckley had 1.2 seconds to cleanly catch the inbound pass and put up a game winner. And he did it perfectly as Franklin defeated Warren 61-58 in the road.
Buckley had already hit a clutch free throw after being fouled on a two-point bucket with 26 seconds left to tie the score at 58. Warren's Tommy Nyquist tried driving to the hoop but dished out to Chase Sitler who tried for the game winner. The shot was blocked by Damarco Payne, who then snagged the loose ball and quickly called a for timeout. Franklin coach Jason Fuller called on Damon Curry to inbound the ball. He found Buckley open around 40 feet from the hoop and got the ball to him. The rest was Buckley's instinct and quickness to launch the game winner. It was a monster game for Payne who led the Knights with 21 points. Buckley had 10, six in the last 30 seconds. The win keeps Franklin firmly in the driver's seat in the region ahead of Warren and Oil City.

Sayyid Donald again led the way with 21 points as the Oilers really didn't give the Titusville Rockets a chance. They held Titusville's lead scorer Isiah Colon to just 15. Oil City's Ethen Knox also pumped in 15 and Will McMahon added 14 in the 69-29 blowout on senior night.
