Clay Campbell, retired Marine and Vietnam era veteran, delivered the keynote address at Oil City's Veterans Day service Saturday morning at the Central Avenue Plaza memorial. Campbell opened with a quote from President Ronald Regan. “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn't pass it on to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same, or, one day, we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children's children what it was once like in the United States where men where free.” He went on to review the wars and conflicts the United States has been or is involved in and around the world. |
Campbell closed with a challenge. “On this day, people will often say thank you for your service. If you really want to thank us for our service, there are things that you can do. One, live your lives well and two, as President John Kennedy said some sixty years ago, 'Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country'."
The program was sponsored by American Legion Post 32 members, who, along with others, laid wreaths in honor of those who have served in all branches of the military. The Oil City Marching Band provide music.
