County school choirs to sing in holiday during Oil City's Christmas Past

A free concert Saturday at Christ Episcopal Church in Oil City will showcase the work of the five Venango high schools who worked together all day long with all area choir teachers and Allegheny College professor James Niblock whose choir will also be performing. This concert is in collaboration with Oil City's Christmas Past Festivities.

The County Choir Christmas Festival, beginning at 7 p.m. Saturday is free and open to the public. It will 
showcase individual choir performances and a full all schools combined choir.

Public meeting on Liberty Street project set for November 30

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation Will hold a public meeting from 6 to 7 p.m. on Thursday November 30 at the First United Methodist Church in Franklin. PennDOT will welcome input at the end of the meeting. No pre-registration is required.

The purpose of the meeting is to introduce the project and receive public input.

It is also an opportunity for the public to review and comment on the project’s potential effect upon the area.

Project documents will be made available in alternative languages or formats if requested. 

The project will include resurfacing, restoration, and rehabilitation of the existing pavement and roadway, intersection improvements and signal updates along Liberty Street and 15th Street from the intersection where Route 62 branches off in Sandycreek Township through downtown Franklin to 8th Street.
The project will also include minor intersection widening at 15th Street to help truck turning and intersection improvements at 12th Street reduce pedestrian crossing lengths and the angle of the bend at that intersection.

Work is expected to begin in 2026.

No detours are expected in connection with the project, but there will be lane restrictions and traffic controlled by flaggers.

The information on the Route 62/322 Improvement Project, including a comment form, will be posted online following the meeting. The page will remain active until December 14, 2023, and can be accessed by visiting the PennDOT District 1 website, www.penndot.pa.gov/District1.

Oil City Vets hold service

Clay Campbell, retired Marine and Vietnam era veteran, delivered the keynote address at Oil City's Veterans Day service Saturday morning at the Central Avenue Plaza memorial. 

Campbell opened with a quote from President Ronald Regan. “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn't pass it on to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same, or, one day, we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children's children what it was once like in the United States where men where free.”

​He went on to review the wars and conflicts the United States has been or is involved in and around the world.

Campbell closed with a challenge. “On this day, people will often say thank you for your service. If you really want to thank us for our service, there are things that you can do. One, live your lives well and two, as President John Kennedy said some sixty years ago, 'Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country'."

The program was sponsored by American Legion Post 32 members, who, along with others, laid wreaths in honor of those who have served in all branches of the military. The Oil City Marching Band provide music.

Franklin Fine Arts Council needs photos for annual wall calendar

Franklin Fine Arts Council is seeking photographers for its annual calendar fundraiser, which this year has the theme "The Franklin We Love."   

All photos submitted must feature Franklin and can depict things such as landscapes, festivals and events, animals, seasonal motifs, or backyard scenes. Photos should have artistic appeal, a compelling use of light, and an interesting compositional structure.


Photos will be chosen based on how they look in print and how well they capture the season or spirit of the month.

Submissions are now open for the 2024 Franklin Calendar with a deadline of November 15, 2023.  
Submission Guidelines
  • Photos must be received by Wednesday, November 15, 2023.
  • 13 Photos will be chosen - one for each months and one for the cover.
  • Photographers must be at least 18 years old.
  • Photos must be originals of the submitter and cannot be copied in whole or in part from any other work or have another individual with a claim over the image.
  • Submitters can upload up to three photos to Seneca Printing Express at https://www.senecaprintingexpress.com/upload-files.
    • Subject Line should read "Franklin 2024 Photos."
    • Submission should include submitter's name and the title of the photograph.
    • Websites or Facebook pages may also be included.
Photo Requirements
  • Digital photography only, no prints. 
  • File format must be  .JPG or .TIFF.
  • Images should be in a horizontal format size 8 1/2 by x 11.
  • 300 DPI preferred through photos with a slightly lower resolution may be considered.

The City of Franklin and Franklin Fine Arts Council retains the right to use any submitted photograph in any advertising/promotion it deems suitable, including but not limited to the 2024 Franklin Calendar.

Seneca Printing, on behalf of the ​the Franklin Fine Arts Council, may color correct, crop or edit submissions as needed. 

Franklin's Events and Marketing Office accepts pictures for general use throughout the year at the email [email protected].
