| One northwest Pennsylvania high school is doing something to keep art alive for not only their students, but students for generations to come. Last year Franklin Area High School began their “Legacy Art Project” as a means to build a permanent collection for the school and eventually the entire school district. They began humbly with a pre-Christmas holiday art sale in order to raise some money. Then they invited artists to submit work for consideration in order to purchase, frame and hang in the school outside the library. They raised over a thousand dollars between sales and donations and were able to purchase their first two pieces. According to the school’s website and art teacher Darrellyn Freeman this project is meant to not only “brighten the environment and build a sense of pride and ownership,” but they hope it can act as an agent to build creative student development and help further connect the community to the school. The goal is to bring pride, culture, professionalism and appreciation for the arts to the school community and those visiting the school. The initial pieces were hung across the hall from the school library where the school board’s public meetings are typically held. Visitors will have time to see the work and know that it is the community’s to enjoy. “(The collection )will be a fundamental tool in the curriculum: stimulate student thinking through demonstrating style and technique, language arts writing assignments, social studies and visual symbols of history, social/emotional learning, and so much more,” the website explains. They also hope, as the collection grows to add permanent displays of appropriate works to the elementary schools. And they hope this effort leads families and alum to return to the school to view the collection. Freeman spearheaded the project that got both administration and the school board support. They plan to have an art sale fundraiser each year and accept donations to build on what they have already done. Last year the project afforded them to purchase two small works by local artists Amy Ivell and Holly Lynn Gibbons. They are currently accepting submissions from regional artists of “two-dimensional artwork that is representational of life in northwestern Pennsylvania. This includes drawing, painting, photography, graphic design, and printmaking. Submissions may be refused if deemed inappropriate for a K-12 setting. Artists must be 18 years of age or older to submit work." The deadline to submit these pieces is Jan. 31. The selected artwork will be revealed during the school's spring art show in May and installed before the end of the school year They are also accepting donations for their sale, The sale will be from 6 to 6 p.m. December 20 outside the school’s auditorium during thei “Night of the Arts” that also features the school’s holiday concert.
