The Grove's junior varsity tean ran over the visiting Jamestown Muskies in the first game of the boys games Saturday afternoon. Then the varsity managed to post their first win of the season in the second game. It's been a long season for the Orioles all around, but things came together finally this weekend for the boys.
On a personal note: I just enjoy the intensity of trying and the learning that comes from getting out there and working. When I was younger I learned a lot about defeat and that helped me appreciate victory all the more. I love photographing people trying in life and that's why I love going to high school games and watching and capturing the effort. Moniteau efficiently handled the struggling Cranberry girls with precise passing around the perimeter and quick hands en route to almost doubling up the Berries. It was still a night of celebration as the school district recognized the 12th grade girls on senior night. Wrestlers were also recognized during the pre-game ceremony. Many a proud parent gleamed during the recognition moment. When it's your kid you find a different way to shape the conversation. Karns City, which is apparently on a different basketball planet from Cranberry, came in and cleaned house. They were proficient and dominating. If you want to hold a clinic on how basketball is played you'd consider showcasing this team. Their purple-esque uniforms are indeed the color of royalty. at least they were tonight as they came in and .... well just beat up on the poor Berries. They were up by 30 points in a blink of an eye. It wasn't that the berries couldn't score, they struggled to even try to score as the pesky defense seemed to be right in the way of each pass that they then snatched away. The lay ups on the other end were happening so fast the scorekeeper struggled to keep up. But games have to played out to the end and the Cranberry team showed dignity by playing hard down to the wire despite Karns City putting the ball through the hoop about 24 more times than they did. When the Cranberry starters were pulled in the hopeless last minutes, the small crowd that was allowed to attend for senior night, applauded. This was a beautiful moment. These kids deserved the recognition of their dedication and they got it. When it's your kid you find a different way to shape the conversation. As a long-time journalist this stuff matters. This wasn't just a game where one team cruised over another team, this was a game that folks got to play and that those who play hard are noticed. Effort begets respect and these Berries, though clearly out classed on the court tonight will never be outclassed in life as they gave their best effort against a very good opponent and never lost their cool. I love my job! Please see more photos from tonight's contest below and a link to even more photos at the bottom. And thank you Buffalo Street Lanes for your continued support. Watching a game like the one tonight between Route 8 rivals Oil City and Franklin I can't help imaging that there is a force field around the basket or, as my ole Aunt Toots would say, there were gremlins sitting on the rim knocking the ball away. That's exactly how it seemed in the first quarter of Franklin's senior night game where the combined total of points scored was seven. Lay ups failed, three pointers failed, most free throws rattled out. It was a mess. The second quarter wasn't much better but at the half they combined for 25 points with Franklin jumping to a seven point lead. They doubled their first half out put plus one in the second half scoring 51 points to end at 39-37. Franklin came out hot increasing their lead by double digits and looked to be sailing until a gritty Oilers squad hunkered down much like they did a month ago against Meadville and mounted a come back chipping and chipping away until the final buzzer left them just two points or one gremlin swat away from a tie.
