It was like a highlight reel night for Franklin's Damon Curry - 26 points, back-to-back three-pointers, a slam dunk, strong defense, big rebounds, impressive ball control, oh, and three kicks. Curry and fellow senior Jalen Wood put on quite the offensive show during the Knight's 71-38 victory over Rocky Grove in the closing night of the Dick Russell Memorial Tournament. Wood hit the first bucket of the game, as Franklin went on an opening 16-3 run on the Orioles. He also showed off his vertical with a couple of blocked shots and finished fast breaks. Wood finished with 18 points on the night. Franklin's other 30 points came from eight other players, including eight from Cole Buckley and six from Damarco Payne. Rocky Grove fields a younger, smaller team than their Venango County rival. While the Knights started five seniors and had three more come off the bench for significant playing time, the Orioles have only one senior and started three sophomores. Landen Carter, one of those sophomores, led the team with 11 points. Josh Stevenson and Noah Baughman had seven points each. Connor Ritchey came off the bench to contribute six points. Next up for Franklin is Cathedral Prep on Wednesday at The Castle. Rocky Grove returns to action on Friday when they host Mercer for a Region game. |

Damarco Payne dropped in 17 and Cole Buckley 16 for the Knights who are now 5-3 on the season. They will face Rocky Grove in the nightcap on Friday. The Dick Russell Memorial isn't a championship-style tournament. Oil City will face Karns City in the 6 p.m. game. Across the county in Cranberry, the Franklin girls kept it close in the championship final against Harbor Creek but ended up falling behind in the second, losing to the Huskies by 21. Harbor Creek kept Katie Boal to just two points. Jenn Blum was Franklin's top scorer with 11 Up in Erie, the Rocky Grove girls scored 41 en route to 15-point win over Iroquois. The Orioles will take on Youngsville tonight for the championship. Below are more photos from Thursday at the Dick Russell tourney.
6' 2" junior center Katie Boal was Franklin's leader on night with 17 overall points, 14 in the first half. She dominated in the paint blocking five shots in the first half and altering many others while grabbing several rebounds. Franklin hounded the Berries on defense all night on defense not allowing many quality shots.
Jenn Blum scored 11 and Estella Adams added nine. Kirsten Hicks and Jamie Blum knocked in five each and Halle Curry added a pair of free throws. Makenzi Emick got a late basket to round out the Knight's scoring.
Marley Rodax led the way for the Cardinals with 11 points and Shelby McBryar with 10. Macie Williams at eight, Eve Pfeiffer had five, and Claire McCartney had two.
Helping out some friends tonight. We covered the Cambridge Springs vs. Maplewood girls basketball game tonight for The Meadville Tribune whose photographer lost her dad late last week. We covered Cambridge against Franklin last week and learned the team is young and inexperienced after having all five starters last year graduate.
Maplewood is full of steller athletes and came in at 5-2 overall. They cruised to a 54-37 win over the Blue Devils/ The Tigers are now 2-0 in the region. Below are more photos from Monday's contest. To read a full game story check out The Meadville Tribune. Former sports writer Matt DiGiocomo was also there covering for the sports editor who does actually deserve a day off once in awhile. It was like old home week. The person laying out sports was managing editor Rick Green. Mat Rick and I all worked together at the Trib over 20 years ago. Meadville jumped out to a quick 9-0 lead over Oil City on the road at the House of Hustle. Oiler coach Bundy Fuller called a timeout to stop the bleeding and it worked, but the Oiler were never able to quite catch up. They came within a couple a few times only to watch Meadville get a bucket or two and begin pulling away again. In the end, Oilers were down one with only a minute and a half left before the Bulldogs took advantage of miscues and free throws to eventually win 58-48. Neither team took advantage of free throws overall but the Dawgs sank enough in the end. With the new foul shot rules taking away the one-and-one many second attempts at least netted a point. Sayyid Donald had a team-high 21 points while Meadville's Lucas Luteran scored 24 and Jack Burchard dropped 18. Will McMahon had nine for the Oilers and Ethan Knox added another seven. Below are more photos from the game.
Earlier in the evening Titusville won the JV game 40-27.
Rae Montgomery hit a shot with only a couple seconds left in the second overtime to give Rocky Grove a 47-45 victory in a barnburner with fellow Class A rural school Jamestown Tuesday night at the Nest. Montgomery recorded a game-high 26 points, including five of the team’s seven in the second overtime of the two-hour game. After a slow start, the Orioles took control of the game to end the first quarter with a 13-9 lead. The second quarter was a defensive battle. Rocky Grove managed only three points but held the Muskies to zero. Coming back from the locker room, the teams traded short point runs and the Orioles maintained at 24-19 lead and some momentum as Montgomery connected for two points right before the third-quarter buzzer. The fourth quarter started a true back-and-forth battle of shots and fouls as Jamestown started to close in on Rocky Grove. With less than a minute to go, the Muskies took the lead again for the first time since the 4-minute mark of the first quarter. The teams traded foul shot opportunities before Rocky Grove’s Zoe Cresswell left the game after being injured during a foul. Her sister, Paige took the line for her to pull the Orioles within 1 point with only 20 seconds left in regulation. After a steal on the inbound pass by Aislynne Anderson and a quick time out with 17-seconds on the clock the Orioles drove to the basket where a big scramble for the ball found junior Faith Copley fouled and headed to the line with a chance to put them ahead. She hit one of two to tie the game at 30 with only a second left in play. In the first 4-minute overtime period, the teams traded baskets as they scrambled up and down the court at a fairly quick pace. This time it was Jamestown that sunk the tying foul shot with only a second left of play. It was 40-up at the end of 36 minutes of play. Zoe Cresswell came back into the game nursing a sore hip for the second overtime period and she and Montgomery powered the Orioles offense while Anderson controlled Jamestown’s top shooter, Alayna Cadman, on defense. Anderson, a freshman, was tasked by head coach Brad Clayton with sticking to Cadman like glue all game. With only a few seconds remaining, Rocky Grove inbounded the ball from their sideline. A quick pass to Montogomery gave her a chance to push to the hoop for the game-winner. “That is a big win, not only because of the overtime, but because that's the single A district champs from last year that they just beat,” head coach Brad Clayton said. Clayton pointed to not just the play of his starters, Montgomery, Anderson, Zoe Cresswell, Lydia Kennedy and Emily Rice, but the importance of the bench in securing a win in such a physical game. On Tuesday, that bench support came from Copley, Gracie Rayburn and Paige Cresswell. “Gracie stepping in there at the end, getting some big, big rebounds in the overtime periods,” he said. “(Copley) just grinds through everything and she’s such a tough defensive player. And she is 100 percent all the time, no matter what.” Scoring for Rocky Grove Tuesday were Montgomery, 26 points; Z. Cresswell, 6; Kennedy, 6; Anderson 3, P. Cresswell, 3; Rayburn, 2 and Copey, 1. Clayton credits the team’s improved ball control, increased confidence in taking shots, and good basketball IQ by some of the younger players with helping them accomplish a 2-1 start to the season. “It’s such a team effort with this group. I’m just so proud of them and how they battle and they believe in each other,” Clayton said. “We’re changing the narrative. We are headed in the right direction.” Rocky Grove gets a few days to practice before meeting up with Iroquois for their next game on Saturday.
Payton Liederbach was named the MVP as Oil City beat Cranberry 38-21 to claim the title in the Roy Sanner Tip-Off Tournament Friday and Saturday at the Rocky Grove High School. It was a repeat of last years championship and a great way for first year head coach Jan Newell to start her tenure with the Oilers. The night before they handled the tournament hosts scoring 47 points while only giving up 26 Liederbach's ball handling and 27 points in two games lead the Oilers. She joined on the all-tournament team by teammate Sophie Garmong who poured in 21 and played tough as nails defense. Other members of the all-tournament were Avery Coe and Raegen Antrilli of Cranberry, RaeLynn Montgomery of Rocky Grove, and Abbie Colie of Titusville The Berries beat the Titusville 38-28 Friday to earn the spot in the championship game In the consolation game, Rocky Grove defeated Titusville 49-39.
