The Rocky Grove boys cross country team has pushed each other all season with one thought in mind – making it back to states.

“Our goal from day one was to win the district… and have the district champion,” said coach Josh Beightol.

On Saturday, they accomplished that and in a dominating fashion. The Orioles recorded 54 team points, nearly half the score of second place Lakeview. And senior Ethan Knapp took first place with a time of 16:43, by three seconds over Mercyhurst Prep’s Kamden Skelton.

“He’s found his groove… he fell into some confidence, and he’s ran with it,” Beightol said of Knapp’s performance on the soggy Titusville course.

Key to Knapp’s victory was learning from last year’s race and pacing himself at the start and before taking over near the 2-mile mark. Knapp came out of the gate into the ninth spot and kept the leaders in sight to make his move.

“This year, I had it figured out,” Knapp said about his strategy of holding back a little at the start. “Then I just ran to run,” he said of his finish.

At the front of the pack Saturday and keeping Knapp on his toes all season was teammate and fellow senior Easton Adamczyk, who led the first two miles of the race.

“They were on each other’s hips,” Beightol said of his top two runners. Adamczyk finished the race in fourth with a time of 16:52.

Not too far behind was sophomore Gauge Gierlach, who captured seventh place and put Rocky Grove in good shape for the team title.

“Our one, two, three, they ran basically all season together, practices and everything,” Beightol said. “Definitely, a fairly tight group (of runners).”

Recording the important fourth and fifth team spots were Schiffer Anderson (17th) and Cael Dailey (25th). Maxx Baker and Nathaniel Bolley also ran for Rocky Grove.

It was vindication for Rocky Grove, which missed qualifying for states last year by just a few points.
Picture
While it is the third time the team has qualified in 10 years with Beightol as coach, it is the first time Beightol had a girl earn a spot in the state competition.

Sophomore Isabel Griffin improved on her 2022 performance, finishing seventh overall with a time of 20:42, guaranteeing her a trip to Hershey.

Beightol was proud of Griffin’s performance despite the runner's disappointment in her seventh-place finish. "I think she wanted to be top three," he said. "She got in, that's all that matters."

He also understands the importance of her performance on the future of Rocky Grove girls running and the future implications for the program.

“She hopefully set up future girls who want to follow that lead,” Beightol said.
Picture
Picture
On Saturday, she ran with teammates Kaylin Jacoby, Sophie Werhl, Ellie Coyer and Ryleigh Baughman.
Picture
As Beightol and his team look forward to their return to Hershey, they are happy to recognize some of their competition.

“It’s nice to see Cranberry or Lakeview(also qualify for states), cause we know those kids, so we can kind of get out with people we know and not (unknown) teams from across the state,” he said. “Every kid’s good when you get to the state meet.”

“Now we go see what we can do with the big boys, right?” Beightol said toward Knapp. “What do you mean? I am one of the big boys,” Knapp responded. “There you go,” Beightol replied before heading off to accept the team trophy.

Rocky Grove’s eight runners are among the large contingent of Venango County athletes who earned spots in the A and AA cross country races.

All Venango schools sending runners to states

10/28/2023

Venango will have strong representation in Hershey next weekend. Every school in the county qualified at least two runners for the state cross country championships.
Picture
Franklin senior Nadalie Latchaw was the top local finisher in the AA races, coming in second in the girls competition with a time of 18:55. It will be Latchaw’s third trip to Hershey, where she finished 51st last year and 70th in 2021.
Picture
Oil City had two state qualifies – freshman Corabel Shiley and Addison Wyant, who finished fifth (19:48) and 13th (20:12). Their strong showing led to a third-place overall finish for the girls team.
Picture
Also scoring for Oil City on Saturday in Titusville were Ella Speece (30th), Olivia Vorse (33rd) and Arianna Griffin (61st). Sophia Garmong and Laila Marvin also ran for Oil City.

Competing for Franklin alongside Latchaw were Madison Marsh, Gabrielle Ion, Olivia Tawney, Emma Ahmadian, Lilliana Fonzo and Ella Marbich.

Anna Mehlenbacher was the top finisher for the Titusville Rockets, coming in at 29th out of 108 runners. The team finished 10th out of 15. Also running for the Rockets were Mackenzie Covell, Madeline Johnson, Emma Wright, Isabella Ongley, Sophia Sampson and Carly Fry.
Picture
On the boys side of things, Franklin’s senior Caleb Prettyman was the top runner in AA. He finished sixth with a time of 16:24. His brother, junior Jay Prettyman, kicked it in for a top ten finish of his own, earning 10th place in a time of 16:37. It is a return trip for the older Prettyman, who finished 51st last year.

In a team competition that was easily dominated by Grove City boys, which scored only 28 points, the Oilers finished fifth, Franklin was 11 and homestanding Titusville was 15 out of 18 teams.

Oil City’s Eli Collins missed qualifying for states by seven seconds, coming in as the team’s top runner at 22nd place. He was followed quickly by Keegan Kirkwood in 23rd place. Also running were Colin Liederbach, Elliot Hulsizer, Brandon Murray, Derek Love, and Ethan Plowman.

Representing the Knights alongside the Prettyman brothers were Kyle Phipps, Jackson Wilson, Hayden Bellis, Jack McNulty and Trace Silvis.

Titusville’s runners were Bryan Johnson, Andrew Bryan, Evan Slocum, Sawyer Wolfkiel, Josiah White, Cash Lavery, Aiden Patterson.

Meadville’s Max Dillaman and Megan Puleio also qualified for the state competition.
In the single A competitions, both of Cranberry’s teams earned second places in the girls and the boys District X races at Ridgway Saturday.

Kelsey Hanna led the Berry girls with a fourth-place finish. She was followed by fellow top ten finishers Kayla Hanna in seventh and Karleigh Shaffer in ninth. Completing the scoring for Cranberry was Jordan Montgomery in 22nd and Gracee Hess in 24th. Zofia Earp and Taylor Hepler also ran for the Berries.

It is a repeat for many of the Berry runners, who were part of the team’s sixth place finish at Hershey last year. The Hanna twins, Shaffer, Hanna, Montgomery and Earp all ran at states for Cranberry last year. It is the third year in the row the school has qualified a team for the competition.

It is also a repeat for the boys, who were led by seventh-place finisher Mariner Perry. Not far behind was Dalton Wenner at 12th and Dane Wenner at 14th. Kaleb Heath and Thatcher Matassa rounded out Cranberry’s scoring runners, finished 23rd and 27th respectively. Also running for the Berries were Elias Fox and Sabastien Bemis.

The Wenners, Perry, Heath and Matassa were all part of the team that placed 14th in 2022.

They will go head to head against Rocky Grove, who won the A competition for District 10 behind a top finish by senior Ethan Knapp. Click here to read a separate story about the team, as well as Rocky Grove’s first female qualifier in some time, Isabel Griffin.

Franklin finishes season strong on come from behind win over Lakeview

10/27/2023

Picture
In week six of the season, out of necessity, senior Cole Buckley switched from wide out to going under center at the teams quarterback.

The Knights had not won a game since 2021.

The move proved brilliant as Franklin finished the second half of the season 4-1 including a season finale come from behind win over the playoff bound now 8-2 Lakeview Sailors.

The Knight's scored in the first quarter to avenge a Lakeview score on a long drive. When it looked like the Knights might have to punt, Buckley rolled out to his right to avoid pressure and found Dreyden Payne 38 yards later for a big first down.

A few plays later Bryson Watson scored on an 11-yard run. Coach Matt Turk said Watson also came up big on defense at the end of the game for the Knights.

Picture
The Knights did not score again until around the six-minute mark of the fourth quarter when Buckley found himself in some trouble in the backfield and began scrambling backwards to avoid the sack. The ball was snapped at the 10-yard line, but Buckley launched a pass from the 31 to Payne in the back of the end zone for the score.

Nate Pfennigwertth drilled the extra point to put them within a field goal to tie. He didn't miss Friday and has consistently prevented runbacks on kickoffs all season.
Picture
Down 17-14, andLakeview with the ball they needed something to happen on defense. They got it.

A bad handoff by Lakeview resulted in a fumble recovery by the Knights  on the Sailors 26 with 4:30 left.

A series of escape runs by Buckley for a couple firsts downs, a penalty that seemed to hurt, but for Buckley getting some solid blocking for an eight-yard end around for the go ahead score with just over two minutes left.
Picture
Pfennigwerths kick put the Knights up by four, 21-17, forcing the Sailors to need a touchdown to win. The Knights held.
Picture
"This region has two of the greatest athletes, I think in the state of Pennsylvania (in Oil City's) Ethen Knox and Cole Buckley," Turk said. Buckley had around 200 yards of total offense in the win.
Picture
This was by far the best season for a Turk led team finishing 4-6. Their only loss in the last five weeks was against powerhouse Meadville.
Picture
The Knights scored some points this year averaging over 18-points a game and they were not shutout.
Picture
They lose a lot of seniors this year, including Buckley, but the program finally seeing some success has got to feel good and help the younger players see hope in the future.

Energetic start fizzled as Panthers proved too much for the Knights

Franklin's Jada Reavis got set as Saegertown launched the first serve of the night in her direction at Conneaut Area High School Thursday. The Knight's fresh off their first playoff win in forever, an upset win over  Fort LeBoeuf Tuesday, were ready to face the number two seed Panthers.

Reavis' pass was perfect to Estella Adams who saw Abby Boland across court with anticipation and blood in her eyes. Her set was spot on and Boland drilled the ball with floorboard crushing speed back over the net for the first point of the game.

All Franklin players on the court, the ones on the bench and the Knight's fans who made the trek up north to Linesville, erupted.

The Lady Knights came to play.
Picture
Picture
This Knight's squad just four years ago struggled to win just one match. Last year they squeaked into the playoffs to be eliminated right away. This year they earned a playoff spot, won a playoff match and came out swinging against a perennial powerhouse from Crawford County.

They battled back and forth for the first 26 points and the Knights led 14-12 with solid play all around.
A couple of times Adams and star hitter Katie Boal seemed so in sync that nothing could stop them.

One set by Adams, when the score was 8-8 resulted in a thunderous spike that Boal hit almost as soon as it left Adams' hands.

Everything seemed to be going right for the Knights, but Saegertown did keep counter punching and eventually wore the Knights down.

Finally the momentum shifted as Saegertown went up 18-14 and never really looked back after that. They took the first set 25-19.
All night Saegertown seemed to have people in the right place at the right time and Franklin did not. At times, the Knights seemed out of sorts.

Saegertown was more consistent and relentless winning the second and third sets in dominating fashion 25-9 and 25-11.

The match eliminated the Knights, ending their season.

McLane just seemed to have more legs

10/25/2023

Picture
After Franklin's first playoff win a few days ago, they ran into a tough General McLane Lancers' squad who played like they had more players and more legs than Franklin. They always seemed to be in the right place at the right time. It was an intense, cranked up to eleven game, that ended with the team up north winning 5-1.

Franklin's only goal came from a very precise 30-yard curving kick from Caleb Griffin from near the sideline at an angle most would think had little chance of going in, never mind hitting the back of the net untouched, much to the surprise of the McLane goalkeeper.

McLane was keyed in on being aggressive and tormenting Nate Pfennigwerth all night. The ball stayed mostly on their side of field and when Franklin seemed to get some open field they paid the price often ending up on the ground from agressive defense. The Lancer just had more scoring chances and as a result, more goals.

This was one of the best seasons for the Knights who finished with and impressive 16 wins and only three losses and a tie.

Knights' block Bison charge, gets big playoff win

10/24/2023

Picture
The Franklin girls volleyball team came into Tuesday night's playoff match against Fort LeBoeuf with determination and a game plan. They stuck to it and at the end of four sets found themselves with their first post-season win since Coach Matt Jones' return to the team eight years ago.
"We were determined to win the game," Jones said. "We hit some low spots but we didn't stay down."

The match started off slow for the Knights, who found themselves down 1-4 early before they rallied back to take a 8-4 behind Estella Adams' solid and planned serving.

"They (Fort LeBeouf) have two girls who pass the ball really well," Jones said. It was Franklin's goal to keep the ball from them as much as possible. "We didn't get a lot of aces, but it took them (Bison players) out of their game."

The Bison did push back to close the gap several times, but the Knights remained in overall control of the scoreboard to capture the 25-22 win.

Franklin stumbled in the second set, struggling to find momentum and committed several playing errors. The Bison took the second set 13-25.

Jones said he told his team to refocus and let go of the loss so they could get back to the plan.

Heading into the third set Franklin, region 3's fifth seed, came out with renewed determination. It was a back and forth start until Adams stepped up again with solid serving to help Franklin jump ahead 8-3. The Bison, region four's 4th seed, fought back and even took the lead.

As both teams started to close in on 25 points, Franklin got a jolt of energy from a commanding spike by Katie Boal who had been largely shutdown up to this point.

"You have to credit (LeBoeuf's) middle hitters - they put up good blocks and took (Boal) out of her game," Jones said.  "Katie is usually our bread and butter on offense. She has led the team in kills all season."

The battle for the third set continued past regulation and ended with a net call on LeBoeuf and a 28-26 victory for Franklin.

The fourth, and what turned out to be the final set, started out with an energetic first point taken by the Bison.

Then Franklin took control, eventually pulling out to a 9-5 lead. It was back and forth volleyball from there. It came down to smart, hard play in the end, as Franklin captured the win 25-23 on an out-of-bounds serve by Fort LeBeouf.

Jones said about LeBoeuf's shutting down Boal could've  been the deciding factor if it wasn't for others stepping up. "Our total eneregy," Jones said was key. "We hit a couple low spots and we did not stay down and we came back. I feel like we wanted to win more than they did."

This was a big deal for the Franklin program. four years ago this team only won one match. The following year they only won three. They made playoffs last year but were ousted right away by Harborcreek.

"This is pretty exciting for this group of kids," Jones said. "It was a lot of fun tonight."

Grove season wasn't without highlights

Rocky Grove has had a struggling year at 3-14, but not like the struggling years of the past where they would be blown out and barely win a single match. They played tough but just ended up short in all but three of their 17 matches thus far.

"The team worked hard all season with a lot of our matches going four and five games," said coach Mike Stevenson.

They played the entire first half of the season on the road with their gym being renovated.

"We struggled with passing early on," Stevenson said.
"Sophomores Kaidlynn Burger and Olivia Faust really stepped up this year. Kaidlynn  did some great things in the back row and was our most consistent server. Olivia continued to improve with hitting and finishing out the season with a nice jump serve."

Stevenson had something positive to say about and said that he hopes the team's record doesn't prevent some of his players from being recognized with post-season honors.

"Abby Cable was a force to be reconned with - with over a hundred kills this season and disrupting offenses with her blocking."

"Junior Katie Beggs controlled the offense in her setting role - also having a strong jump serve. Seniors Paige Cresswell and Natalee Sloss hit from the corners and provided defense in the back row. Seniors Josie Seely and Abby Cable made their presence known out of the middle."

"Katie Biggs and Cable  and Abby did some amazing things throughout the season. Running quick sets out of the middle and later in the season adding some additional offense outside of the middle."

Oil City freshman Corabel Shiley won with a time of 21:16 and Titusville edged out Cranberry to capture the girls team title at the Rocky Grove Invitational Saturday at Two Mile Run County Park.

Sixteen teams competed in the rainy 5K race. Other local teams were Oil City (fifth), Rocky Grove (11) Maplewood (14), and Franklin (15). There were 137 runners who finished the race, including some from eight schools that did not have enough racers to complete as a team.

Cranberry sisters Kelsey and Kayla Hanna both finished in the top ten. Kelsey was second with a time of 21:27, and Kayla was sixth with a time of 22:02. Sophomore Isabel Griffin was the home team’s top runner with a time of 22:10, which was good enough for seventh. Titusville’s Anna Mehlenbacher was eighth with a time at time of 22:12. Oil City’s Addison Wyant finished with a 22:26 and 10th place.
