Venango will have strong representation in Hershey next weekend. Every school in the county qualified at least two runners for the state cross country championships. Franklin senior Nadalie Latchaw was the top local finisher in the AA races, coming in second in the girls competition with a time of 18:55. It will be Latchaw’s third trip to Hershey, where she finished 51st last year and 70th in 2021. Oil City had two state qualifies – freshman Corabel Shiley and Addison Wyant, who finished fifth (19:48) and 13th (20:12). Their strong showing led to a third-place overall finish for the girls team. Also scoring for Oil City on Saturday in Titusville were Ella Speece (30th), Olivia Vorse (33rd) and Arianna Griffin (61st). Sophia Garmong and Laila Marvin also ran for Oil City. Competing for Franklin alongside Latchaw were Madison Marsh, Gabrielle Ion, Olivia Tawney, Emma Ahmadian, Lilliana Fonzo and Ella Marbich. Anna Mehlenbacher was the top finisher for the Titusville Rockets, coming in at 29th out of 108 runners. The team finished 10th out of 15. Also running for the Rockets were Mackenzie Covell, Madeline Johnson, Emma Wright, Isabella Ongley, Sophia Sampson and Carly Fry.
The Knights did not score again until around the six-minute mark of the fourth quarter when Buckley found himself in some trouble in the backfield and began scrambling backwards to avoid the sack. The ball was snapped at the 10-yard line, but Buckley launched a pass from the 31 to Payne in the back of the end zone for the score. Nate Pfennigwertth drilled the extra point to put them within a field goal to tie. He didn't miss Friday and has consistently prevented runbacks on kickoffs all season. Down 17-14, andLakeview with the ball they needed something to happen on defense. They got it. A bad handoff by Lakeview resulted in a fumble recovery by the Knights on the Sailors 26 with 4:30 left. A series of escape runs by Buckley for a couple firsts downs, a penalty that seemed to hurt, but for Buckley getting some solid blocking for an eight-yard end around for the go ahead score with just over two minutes left. Pfennigwerths kick put the Knights up by four, 21-17, forcing the Sailors to need a touchdown to win. The Knights held. "This region has two of the greatest athletes, I think in the state of Pennsylvania (in Oil City's) Ethen Knox and Cole Buckley," Turk said. Buckley had around 200 yards of total offense in the win. This was by far the best season for a Turk led team finishing 4-6. Their only loss in the last five weeks was against powerhouse Meadville. The Knights scored some points this year averaging over 18-points a game and they were not shutout. They lose a lot of seniors this year, including Buckley, but the program finally seeing some success has got to feel good and help the younger players see hope in the future.
This Knight's squad just four years ago struggled to win just one match. Last year they squeaked into the playoffs to be eliminated right away. This year they earned a playoff spot, won a playoff match and came out swinging against a perennial powerhouse from Crawford County. They battled back and forth for the first 26 points and the Knights led 14-12 with solid play all around.

After Franklin's first playoff win a few days ago, they ran into a tough General McLane Lancers' squad who played like they had more players and more legs than Franklin. They always seemed to be in the right place at the right time. It was an intense, cranked up to eleven game, that ended with the team up north winning 5-1. Franklin's only goal came from a very precise 30-yard curving kick from Caleb Griffin from near the sideline at an angle most would think had little chance of going in, never mind hitting the back of the net untouched, much to the surprise of the McLane goalkeeper. McLane was keyed in on being aggressive and tormenting Nate Pfennigwerth all night. The ball stayed mostly on their side of field and when Franklin seemed to get some open field they paid the price often ending up on the ground from agressive defense. The Lancer just had more scoring chances and as a result, more goals. This was one of the best seasons for the Knights who finished with and impressive 16 wins and only three losses and a tie. The Franklin girls volleyball team came into Tuesday night's playoff match against Fort LeBoeuf with determination and a game plan. They stuck to it and at the end of four sets found themselves with their first post-season win since Coach Matt Jones' return to the team eight years ago.
Franklin will now face Saegertown at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26 at Conneaut Area High School in Linesville.

Sophomore Isabel Griffin was the home team’s top runner with a time of 22:10, which was good enough for seventh. Titusville’s Anna Mehlenbacher was eighth with a time at time of 22:12. The two squads don't always get a chance to play each other, but they both had an opening on the schedule and based on the size of the crowd they should consider making it a regular thing.
