The Oilers had to work hard at it but found a way to grind out a win over the Bobcats 38-36 Tuesday night in the District 10 semifinals basketball game at Slippery Rock University.

Despite snagging the tip-off Oil City couldn't capitalize and found themselves down quickly when Seneca's Logan Kibbe struck first with a trey at the 7:15 mark.

Sayyid Donald quickly responded with a 3-pointer of his own to even up the score. The back-and-forth battle was underway on the scoreboard. The Bobcat defense seemed to frustrate the Oilers at times, stripping the ball, forcing bad passes and rushed decisions.

Neither team was finding much success getting the ball through the hoop as the first quarter ended with Oil City up by one at 9-8.

The second quarter started off slow for both teams until Oil City's Jake Hornbeck hit for two at 5:41. He scored six in a row for the Oilers, who were up 15-8 with 3:25 to go in the half. The Bobcats got a lift, again from Kibbe, who hit two three-pointers before the half ended evaporating the lead Oil City gained in the quarter back down to one.

Seneca came out strong from the locker room, claiming the first five points of the second half and taking a 21-17 lead. Once again it was Donald who kick-started the Oiler offense and once again he did so with a trey. Kibbe answered with another two points to maintain the lead for the Bobcats.

Gavin Stevenson came off the bench and got the Oilers back on top with a pair of free throws and a field goal.

Cameron VanWormer and Hornbeck added two apiece to complete an eight-point run. Oil City was up 28-23, but not for long.
Seneca again answered with a couple of foul shots of their own and another three-pointer by Kibbe to tie it at 28 with two minutes remaining in the third quarter.
Picture
Hornbeck hit for another two points. Kibbe answered with another three less than 10 seconds later. Hornbeck repeated his effort and Oil City was once again up by one point  at the end of a quarter, 32-31.
Picture
Kibbe opened the fourth quarter with his eighth three-pointer of the night and again Hornbeck responded by sinking two foul shots to once again tie the game.

With 6:11 left in the game and tied at 34, the back and forth scoring came to a three-minute halt.

VanWormer finally broke the stalemate with two points at the 3:03 mark. Seneca responded with two of their own.
Hornbeck put up his final two points of the night to give Oil City a lead they would keep through strong defensive plays by Donald and Ethen Knox. Despite the opportunity to earn a few more points down the stretch, Oil City was unable to capitalize on the foul shot opportunities.
Picture
Kibbe had a game-high 26 points and reached the 1,000 career mark during the game.

Hornbeck led the Oilers with 20 points. VanWormer had eight, Donald had six, and Stephens had four.

The Oilers will face Route 8 rivals Franklin on Friday at a site and time to be determined.

The fighting Berries come back to conquer repeat

"These kids never get enough basketball."  - Paula Klinger
Picture
Cranberry repeated as St. Patrick's Parish Tournament champions. This year they had to fight back from the loser's bracket in the double elimination tournament. The Fighting Berries lost in the semi-finals to Oil City and had to battle Cochranton to get a rematch with the Oiler's. In the first rematch game they dominated and continued that momentum to win the "if necessary" game and the championship trophy.

Organizer Paula Klinger noted the 38th annual St. Pat's tournament is now a Parish tournament and not a school hosted tournament. The money raised will go into the Parish's athletic programs and upkeep of the gymnasium and equipment as a community resource.
Picture
"Oh my gosh, it was full here yesterday," Klinger said of the crowd who came to support the fifth- and sixth- grade ballers.

Cochranton finished third losing to Cranberry in the loser's bracket final.

Tough ending for the Knights against scrappy Conneaut

2/26/2023

Picture
When Franklin girls basketball head coach Ryan Justice called a timeout with 5:06 remaining in the third quarter his team had just fallen behind by 11 points. It was their largest deficit of the afternoon. He huddled this girls together on the edge of the court and looked each one of them in the eyes as he patted himself on the left side of his chest. "It has to come from here," he told them emphasizing they need to play with heart if they wanted to win this game
Picture
Unfortunately, his counter part, Conneaut Area's Christine Krankota was talking to her team as well. She was visibly pleased by her team's tenacity on defense and the 6-0 run that gave them the largest lead of the game, facilitating Franklin's timeout.
Picture
On paper the teams were very similar with nearly identical records and they split their regular season matchups both winning at home. So this meeting at Farrell High School, a neutral location, looked as though it would be a pretty evenly matched game. And it was... well, except for Conneaut's sophomore guard Lainie Harrington who had a monster game on defense and an even better game on offense scoring 20 points, several of them layups off steals.
Picture
Watching Harrington score was Franklin's defensive specialist Gabby LaJeunesse who sat helpless on the bench in street cloths and boot cast on her foot.

Conneaut had also done their homework and pestered the team's top scorer Estella Adams holding her to just two first half three-pointers. They got hands in the faces of the Blum sisters as well causing them both struggle to score.
Picture
Franklin's outside shots were off the mark and often fell short of the rim. Their inside work was heavily contested by Conneaut resulting in balls that just weren't falling, being stolen or forcing jump ball after jump ball.
Picture
Picture
In the end the Knight's just didn't have an answer for Conneaut's heart, their desire to win or Harrington.
Harrington was the game's high scorer with 20 while Hannah Brady added 11, Morgan Poff had a key seven points and Eliza Harrington and Jacqueline Detelich each added a pair.

Picture
Picture
Picture
Franklin's Katie Boal was the only one to score after Justice's third quarter timeout chat. She was the team's high scorer with seven. Adams had just six, Jamie Bloom three and Jennifer Blum, Kirstin Hicks and Hallie Curry each had two.

Titusville qualified four wrestlers for the North West AA Regional competition following their top eight finishes at the District 10 Championships Saturday at Sharon High School.

Senior Brock Covell placed highest among the Rockets. He earned the third place spot on the podium for the 172 weight class after winning his final match of the weekend with a 7-1 decision over Josh Divens of Sharpsville.

Covell started the weekend with a pin over Gabriel Jordan of Saegertown in 2:35 and a 7-1 decision over Danick Hinkson of Commodore Perry. On Saturday he faced a nearly unbeaten Jalen Wagner of Reynolds and fell just short of victory in the 1-0 loss.

Covell rebounded in the consolation bracket pinning Alex Hackwelder of Grove City in 1:51 before meeting up with Divens and earning his final victory.

He was 4-1 on the weekend, which improves his season record to 32-6 and his overall win count to 96.

Teammate Nate Stearns also competed in the consolation finals, finishing in fourth place in the 139 bracket. Stearns suffered an early loss to Zac Turberville of Slippery Rock in his only bout Friday. The Titusville junior muscled through three matches on Saturday to earn a spot in the third place, along the way defeating Nick Fisher of Harbor Creek with a pin in 33 seconds, Blake Glass of Fort LeBoeuf with a 3-1 decision, and Logan McDonald of Youngsville with a 1-0 decision. In his final match, Stearns lost to Cash Morrell of Cochranton in a 6-3 decision.

Stearns was 3-2 on the weekend and improved his overall record to 26-9.

Titusville also had two wrestlers finish in eighth place, slipping into the final regional qualifying spot for regionals next week.

Sawyer Wolfkiel was 2-3 on the weekend in the 107 bracket and fell to Brady Bowers of Fort LeBoeuf in his final match of the weekend. Gavin Donaldson has two pins on the weekend on his way to an eighth-place finish in the 145 weight class. He forfeited his final match to Gregory Kiser of Saegertown.

McFetridge, Wenner take District 9 titles; Cranberry advances 6

2/25/2023

Picture
It was a repeat performance for the Berries at the District 9 Wrestling Championships as they once again advanced six into the North West AA Regional. But this time, they will be taking two District champs among their competitors.

Brayden McFetridge (215) and Dalton Wenner (107) earned spots on top of the podium Saturday at PennWest Clarion’s Tippin Gymnasium. Teammates Elijah Brosius (121) and Conner Reszkowski (133) placed second. Dane Wenner (139) finished third. And Devyn Fleeger (152) snagged the final qualifying spot with a fourth-place finish.

Dalton Wenner started things off in the finals for the Berries with a quick match-up against Andrew Coriaty of Oswayo Valley. The freshman controlled the bout from start to finish. In less than a minute, he had Coriaty on his back and at the 1:01 mark, a whistle and a slap of the mat declared him a winner by pin. Wenner’s record is 28-3 on the season and 3-0 on the weekend.

It is the second year in a row Cranberry took the lightweight bracket at the District 9 Championship. Brosius, last year’s winner, moved up to the 121 weight class for this year’s competition and earned a repeat appearance at the district finals.

Brosius’ final-round opponent was Evan Davis of Clearfield, who finished in second place last year in the AAA division. Davis took the lead in the match with a takedown in the first period. The second stanza ended with the same 0-2 score. Sophomore Brosius made a move to take down Davis, but despite calls from the crowd to award points, the ref maintained that no scoring actions were completed. Brosius remained aggressive but was unable to wrangle Davis and the match ended with a 0-2 decision in favor of the Falcon senior. Brosius’ record is 27-9 on the season and 2-1 on the weekend.

Reszkowski struggled to gain momentum in his 133 match-up with Parker Pisarchick of Brockway. Pisarchick scored two points in each of the first two periods and three in the third to win the bout by a 0-7 margin. The second-place finish marks an improvement for the sophomore Berry. Last year Reszkowski was fourth at Districts in the 126 weight class. His record is 27-9 on the season and 2-1 on the weekend.

McFetridge capped off the Cranberry finals run with a technical fall over Gavyn Ayers of Coudersport. The match started off slow for the senior and the first two minutes ended with no score. From there, it was McFetridge’s match nearly all the way. He struck first and bounced back from a reversal to end the second period with an 8-3 lead. Ayers battled a nosebleed, taking timeouts in the second and third periods. Even with the breaks in the action, McFetridge held on to the rhythm of control, dominating the final two minutes of the contest. By the time the final whistle blew, he walked away with a 20-4 victory. McFertidge’s record is 32-4 on the season. He was 4-0 on the weekend, with three pins.

The quartet of finalists will be joined at regionals by Dane Wenner and Fleeger who wrestled in the third-place matches earlier in the afternoon.

Dane Wenner pinned Anthony Ceriani of Brookville in 1:58. It is the sophomore second year earning third place. He is 31-8 on the season and 3-1 on the weekend.
Picture
Fleeger struggled in his match against Andrew Wolfanger of St. Mary's, losing 17-6. It will be a return to the 152 regional bracket for Fleeger, who is now 25-13 on the season and was 2-2 on the weekend.

Cranberry had two other wrestlers make it to Saturday afternoon, missing regional qualification by just one place. Alex McLaughlin’s bout at 114 and Brandon Murray’s contest at 127 played out very similarly. Both freshmen were falling behind in the point count when they were able to make quick moves in the second period to secure somewhat sudden pins. McLaughlin pinned Ian O'Shea of Port Allegany in 3:44. Murray pinned Brett Moss of Coudersport in 3:23.
Picture
Those results helped Cranberry finish third among the 16 teams at the championships with 155.5 points. Clearfield won the team award with 186 points.

Ditto: Two finishes that were oddly similar in Oil City

Picture
An overwhelming feeling of deja-vu rolled through the House of Hustle Friday night when Franklin found itself at the foul line with seconds left needing to hit one to tie and another to win.

Earlier in the night Rocky Grove discovered itself in the exact same position.

Both squads hit one, missed the second and, like it was written in a Groundhog Day style script, they both got a second chance again at a game-winning free throw that neither could convert sending both games into overtime.

In the extra stanzas, both Franklin and Rocky Grove prevailed having just a little bit more left in the tank to win and advance in the 3A and 1A classes in District 10.
Picture
The Grove got off to a rocky start falling behind 9-0 against Cochranton.
Picture
Point guard Schiffer Anderson finally got the Orioles on the scoreboard with just under four minutes left in the first quarter when he drained a long-range three. Seconds later D’Andre Whitman stole the ball near half court and added a layup.

But that was it for the first quarter, fortunately the Cardinals weren't exactly dropping them down either only mustering 11 in the first eight-minutes.
Picture
In the second, Quinn Richey got hot scoring five unanswered points to bring the Orioles within four. Neither team was explosive in the scoring department.

At the half, Cochranton held a five-point lead 20-15.
Picture
The third quarter was more like Rocky Grove basketball where they outscored the Cardinals 18-11 to go up by two heading into the fourth.
Picture
The would-be final quarter was pretty even overall with the Cardinals having a slight edge thanks to several missed foul shots by the Orioles down the stretch. As the final seconds wound down Rocky Grove found itself behind.
Picture
Whitman was fouled with 12.9 seconds on the clock and down by one.
Picture
He hit the first one but the second bounced out. Then Quinn Richey fouled Cochranton’s Chase Miller, who was their leading scorer on the night, with 8.8 seconds left.
Picture
Miller missed both his attempts, sending the Orioles back up court hoping for a last-second bucket when Landen Carter was fouled in the final second.

The freshman failed to convert giving a desperation heave by Cochranton that fell way short.
Picture
In overtime, the Grove scored nine points. Ironically they knocked down five free throws as part of their nine while the Cardinals could only muster two three-pointers.
Picture
At the finish, Rocky Grove checked the win box with a 51-48 victory. On Tuesday, they face a very tough Farrell, who they recently lost to in one of the season's more interesting games.
Picture
At the start of the night, Damon Curry stood 19 points away from the 1,000 point club. He got 18. Luckily, the Knights won so all he needs is a single shot Tuesday to join this elite membership.
Picture
Early on in their matchup against Mercyhurst Prep, it looked like the Knights would slowly build the lead toward the running clock mark. But the green and white Lakers came to the game ready to aggressively push the Knights and force Franklin to have to earn the win.
Picture
Tuesday had the makings of being Cole Buckley's night. Number four was driving and scoring almost at will in the first quarter scoring 10 points. He was two-thirds of the Knights' overall offense at that point.
Picture
In the second quarter, the rest of the squad picked up and it looked like the Knights were starting to cruise. They led 36-21 at the half including a buzzer-beating tip-in by senior guard Ethan Owens.
Picture
During the third quarter, the Lakers began to surge, outscoring the Knights by seven points and ending at 49-38.
Picture
Franklin opened the fourth with perhaps their sloppiest play of the season. They were suddenly being out rebounded and the Lakers were robbing the Knights left and right and turning those steals into baskets. After only a few minutes, the lead was down to single digits and the Lakers' confidence was growing.
Picture
Then, with only a couple minutes left on the clock, Mercyhurst rattled off nine unanswered to take the lead 56-55
Picture
Damon Curry was fouled with 6.8 seconds remaining. In his left hand, which was injured early in the season, the Knights' fate relied.  He sunk the first free throw that rattled a bit but fell. He then missed the second and into overtime they went.
Picture
In overtime, the Franklin squad looked more like itself, building a little lead and then counter-punching when the Lakers hit pay dirt.
Picture
In the end, the Region 6 champs created a seven-point lead with about a minute left and held off the last Laker offensive strike to clinch the victory with a 71-68 margin.
Franklin will square off against Fairview on Tuesday at a site and time yet to be determined. They lost to Fairview earlier this season on a buzzer-beater at the Dick Russell tournament.
Whitman led the way for Rocky Grove with 22 points. Buckley had 23 for Franklin. Barring some unforeseen circumstances, Franklin's Damon Curry will net his 1,000th career point on Tuesday with his first bucket.
Oil City, who was playing up the road in Meadville Friday night, easily handled North East with a 68-37 win. They will move on to the semi-finals and take on Seneca, who upset Girard.

If both Oil City and Franklin win Tuesday, it will set up another chance for brothers, Jason and Bundy Fulmer to go head-to-head as coaches in an all-Venango County District 10 championship game.

Senior Brock Covell is Titusville's only wrestler remaining in the championship brackets of the District 10 tournament being held Friday and Saturday at Sharon High School.

Covell entered the tournament as the second seed out of Section 1 and was matched up with Gabriel Jordan of Saegertown in the opening round of action for the 172 weight class. Covell pinned Jordan in 2:37 to secure his first victory of the evening.

In the championship quarterfinals, he handled Danick Hinkson of Commodore Perry with a 7-1 decision. In the semifinals, he will face Jalen Wagner of Reynolds, who is the top seed out of Section 2. Wagner will have the advantage of an extra day of rest after his Friday schedule included a first-round bye and then a win by injury forfeit in the second round.

Nate Stearns, who entered the District 10 championships as the top 139 seed out of Section 1, dropped a close 10-8 decision to Zac Turberville of Slippery Rock in the quarterfinals. The loss pushes Stearns to the consolation bracket, where he can still finish as high as third, but first he must beat Nick Fisher of Harbor Creek when action restarts Saturday morning.

Other Titusville wrestlers who won their opening-round bouts included Gavin Donaldson at 145 and Landen Wolfkiel at 152.

Donaldson pinned Mitchell Blood of Conneaut Area in 4:18 to move on to the quarterfinals, where he forfeited due to injury to Tino Gentile of Reynolds. He is listed on the consolation bracket as facing Hunter Gonda of Harbor Creek on Saturday.

Wolfkiel recorded a 6-3 decision of Mitchell Tingley of Commodore Perry in the first round of 152 matches. In the quarters he was beaten 7-3 by Caullin Summers of Sharpsville. Wolfkiel's Saturday will start with a bout against Trey Proper of Corry, who he beat twice already this season.

Sawyer Wolfkiel stayed alive in the 107 consolation bracket following a loss to Cochranton's Kyle Lantz in the first round of action. During his second match of the night, Sawyer Wolfkiel pinned Rowan Feikles of Cambridge Springs in 37 seconds. He will start of today with a match against Hudson Wolbert of Grove City.

Trenton Rodgers bounced back from an upset loss to Michael Wickstrom Maplewood in the 133 bracket and earned a 15-0 technical fall over Landon Harnett of General McLane in 4:25. Rodgers will shoot to make it to the third-place bout by first going up against William Allen of Corry.

Kameron Mong held on for a 3-1 Ian McCreary of Grove City to remain in contention for a possible place in the 189 weight class. He dropped his first match to Aiden Osborne of Commodore Perry with a pin in 1:08. He faces the second-place finisher from Section 2, Brayden McCloskey, first thing Saturday.

Titusville swim coaches hopeful about Districts

2/23/2023

Picture
Titusville swim coaches are optimistic about some of their swimmers making it to “the big show” as boys coach Kevin Dawson put it this week. The big show is the state championships held at Bucknell University from March 15 to 18.

Before that, they have to swim well at the District 10 Championships on March 3 and 4 in Geneva, Ohio at the Spire Institute athletic complex.

Last week the Rockets closed out their regular season by splitting with the tough Franklin Knights. The girls handled the Knights 115 to 53 while the boys dropped 102 to 67.

Dawson said Joe Herman has already posted times in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke that he believes could get him to Bucknell. “Alex and Eric (Reynolds) could potentially get their 100 breaststroke down far enough to put them in the hunt for an at-large bid."

Max Chatham is also competing at districts in the Individual medley.
Picture
On the girls side, coach Seth Come is taking 12 individual qualifiers to districts.

“As a team, we would love to be in the top five like we were at the Northeast Invitational,” Come said.  “Cathedral Prep will be the team to beat and General McLane, Slippery Rock and Fairview will all have strong outings. Our team goal will be to beat Corry. Our strongest events collectively will be the 200 Medley Relay, the 100 freestyle, the 500 freestyle, the 100 backstroke, the 100 breaststroke and the 400 Free Relay. Should be an exciting day.”

Come said the medley relay “should be a very strong event for us,” with the team at a school record time.
“The 400 Free relay team should be a very exciting way to end the competition," he said. "We are right around four seconds off the school record and if we hit that time we should be in contention for one of the at-large bids for (states).”

The Rocket girls finished the regular season with just two losses to region champion Slippery Rock. The boys finished at .500 for the season.
