Franklin capitalized on a strong second quarter and early foul trouble by the homesteading Oilers to win 53-38 Monday night in a Region 5 basketball matchup at the House of Hustle. Junior Estella Adams had a game-high 15 points, including a trio of three pointers in the second quarter to lead the Knights offensive effort. The Knights held a slim 9-5 margin at the end of the first quarter thanks in part to several blocked shots by Katie Boal and the evening's first buzzer beater - a three pointer by Sydney Stevens. Franklin took that momentum into the second quarter and scored seven more points before the Oilers managed a bucket. Maddy Marczak recorded seven of her team leading 14 points in the second quarter, but Oil City could not keep pace with the Knights. Adams hit Franklin's next buzzer beater - another three pointer - to end the half ahead 29-14. The Knights and their head coach Ryan Justice, who could be seen furiously clapping several times in the quarter, headed into the locker room energized. The halftime deficient turned out to be a margin the Oilers could not overcome despite coming out more aggressive with their defense in the third quarter. Thirteen points behind was all the closer the home team got get the remainder of the evening as they played even the second half. Oil City's Nicki Petro hit the evening's third buzzer beater - yet another three pointer - but Franklin still held a 15-point lead with 40-25 at the close of three. Both teams closed out the fourth with matching each others 13 points. Oil City freshman Payton Liederbach drilled the fourth near buzzer beater to close out the game. Along with Adams, Franklin's Jamie Blum knocked in 12 points including, nine in the second half; Jennifer Blum and Kirsten Hicks each had eight; Stevens scored five; Gabby LaJeunesse with three; and Boal , who was quite busy blocking shots all night, added two, but it was the first two of the game for the Knights. Joining Marczak in contributing to Oil City's offensive effort were Liederbach with seven points; Molly Mietus with six; Emma Stahl with four; Petro had three; and Ashlee Shreckengost and Madalynn Wenner with two apiece. Oil City (8-6, 1-2) will travel to Linesville Thursday for a region game against Conneaut Area. Franklin (8-6, 2-1) will host Meadville Thursday night for a region matchup. |
