We are headed to states for a once in a lifetime opportunity," coach Ashleigh Phillips said after the Mid-Eas/Cochranton 12 and under squad won the sectional tournament in Meadville 12-8 Friday afternoon against Punxsutawney.
Despite giving up eight runs on 11 hits, MEC pitcher Abigail Mawhinney dominated early in the contest while she and her teammates lit up Punxsy at one point threatening to invoke the ten-run mercy rule.
At 10-0 in the fourth, Punxsy got a little hot at the plate and kept forcing another inning. In the bottom of the sixth their 12-5 lead dwindled to 12-8 with the bases loaded before a line drive was snagged by Mawhinney's quick glove to end the game.
MEC moves on to the double elimination state tournament in Indiana Pa.
