Rocky Grove amassed a 12-point lead at the half and scored when it mattered most in the second to earn a 28-24 win over visiting Commodore Perry on Senior Night Friday. Each of the team's three seniors got to walk away from the rough game with a special moment. Injured player Paige Cresswell was given a chance to shoot an uncontested layup following a ceremonial tip-off due to a pre-game agreement between the two teams. Tough as nails Emily Rice connected for a buzzer-beater to end the first half and give her teammates a 21-9 lead heading into the locker room. And Rae Montgomery once again showed why she has been the team's leading scorer for two seasons by being the night's only player to hit double digits with 10 points. Along with Montgomery's game-high total, the Orioles were balanced in the book with four points from Grascen Reyburn and Lydia Kennedy, three points from Rice, two points from Paige Cresswell, Zoe Cresswell and Faith Copley, and a single point from Aislynne Anderson. With the victory, the Orioles snapped a 10-game losing streak and likely cemented an invitation to play in the District 10 playoffs, which only invites two 1A teams. Rocky Grove has a 7-13 record on the season and a chance to earn their first region win on Monday when they host Youngsville. They will end their season with a road game in Union City. |
