Rocky Grove, which typically fields a predominately underclassmen squad, gave a chance for its seniors to shine as they handily defeated Jamestown 73-33 in Region 1 play. Seniors Joshua Stevenson, Carson "Chippy" Whilting and Steve "Gibby" Gibbons were honored as part of the pre-game festivities. Cheerleaders Rily Dunkle, Bree Jones and Jamie Thomas were also recognized. The teams also took time to honor long-time school supporters Floyd and Sue O'Neil, who have given countless hours to helping the Rocky Grove athletic programs over the years. Stevenson and Whitling presented the couple with a clock as a token of appreciation. After losing the tip-off, the Orioles easily controlled the evening's varsity game, which featured all three seniors in the starting lineup. They led 16-6 after eight minutes and doubled up the Muskies 30-15 at the half. They outscored Jamestown 22-4 in the opening six minutes of the second half to put the running clock into play. The strong lead gave the team the luxury to focus on giving their seniors additional opportunities to score in the final quarter. This led to Gibbons, a transfer from Franklin, hitting a three-pointer with less than 2:30 to play, his first varsity points as an Oriole. Whitling also took advantage of the night's energy and scored three times for six points. Stevenson, who is a regular member of the starting squad, had five points. Sophomores Noah Baughman and Landon Carter led Rocky Grove with 21 and 10 points respectively. The Orioles, who improved to 14-7 overall and 5-2 in the region, close out the regular season with a trip to Commodore Perry on Friday. |
