Stearns wins section title

Nate Stearns took the podium in the 139 weight class and led the Titusville wrestling squad in their strong showing at the Section 1 competition.

The team also had three second-, one fourth-, two sixth- and two seventh-place finishers, and will take nine wrestlers to the District 10 championship tournament next weekend at Sharon High School.

Stearns defeated Logan McDonald of Youngsville 10-7 to win the bracket. The match was very active. Stearns struck first with a takedown in less than 10 seconds to jump out to a 2-0 lead. McDonald got a reversal before the first period ended to tie up the score.

In the second period, Stearns scored quickly again with a reversal but found himself in a bad position and McDonald got another reversal. This was followed quickly by another reversal by Stearns, an escape by McDonald, a takedown by Stearns and an escape by McDonald. At the end of the period, it was 8 to 6 in favor of Stearns.

In the final stanza, Stearns elected to let McDonald start at neutral, making the score 8-7 with two minutes to go. With the match entering the final seconds Stearns got one more takedown to capture the section title with a 10-7 decision.
​The Rocket junior was 3-0 on the weekend. On Saturday morning he beat Blake Glass of Fort LeBoeuf 8-2.

​Titusville had three other wrestlers in Saturday evening’s finals –  who finished in second place.
Trenton Rodgers dropped a 3-0 decision to District 10 2022 126 champ JoJo Przybycien of Fort LeBoeuf. Rodgers had a 2-1 outing at sections. In his first match on Saturday, the junior earned a 3-1 decision over William Allen of Corry Area.

​Junior Gavin Donaldson was pinned by Hudson Spires of General McLane in 2:44 in the 145 class. Donaldson ended 2-1 on the competition. Earlier on Saturday he defeated Lucas Phelps of North East with a pin in 4:37.

​And senior Brock Covell dropped a close 3-2 decision to Conner McChesney of Fort LeBoeuf in the 172 bracket. Earlier in the day he pinned Jessi Stempka of General McLane in 2:48. Covell was 2-1 on the weekend and upped his career win total to 92. 

​Other Rocket wrestlers placing at sections and moving on to the district competition include Landon Wolfkiel, 152, fourth; Johnathan Miller, 160, sixth; Kameron Mong, 189, sixth; Sawyer Wolfkiel, 107, seventh; and Coleman Huck, 127, seventh.
