Then it was Saegertown's time to bat and they lit it up. They batted around the order and scored and scored and scored. 11 first inning runs set the tone.
When St. Mary's finally returned to bat they were rusty and all the wind was taken from their sails. They were still able to get the bat on the ball. but suddenly the ball just didn't go very far or with any gusto. Saegertown's strong fundamental defense made easy work of them.
Groner also became very efficient. He retired the sides on just six pitches in the second inning and then he tossed only three the next. Meanwhile their offense kept adding runs and at the end of four innings it was over. 15-3.
The if necessary games indeed necessary. Tonight the two squads square off again for the title and a chance to advance.
