Rocky Grove and Lakeview junior varsity scored more points Friday night at The Nest than the varsity, but the Orioles came out on top in both games. The JV squad finished 45-38. The varsity held on for a 43-35 victory. RG eased out to a 7-0 lead in the first three minutes. They then had a two-minute plus dry spell as Lakeview finally got onto the scoreboard four minutes and 30 seconds into the contest. At the end of the first, it was only 10-5. Rocky Grove took nearly six minutes to score in the second and fell behind 13-10 before rallying to score five points to go into the half with a two-point lead 15-13. The Orioles came out in the second half more aggressive employing a half court press. Scoring five unanswered points and frustrating the Sailors which forced Lakeview’s Santa shirt clad coach to call timeout. The press seemed to work as the Orioles rolled out to a ten point lead 31-21, but again hit a two-minute dry spell to end the third quarter and leading 31-24 to start the fourth. A three-pointer by Quinn Ritchey 31 seconds into the quarter put the Orioles up by ten again before another long drought brought the Sailors back to within one point at 34-33. He finished the game with nine points. With just over two-minutes left D’Andre Whitman got hot from the foul line, ending up with game-high 14 points. Lakeview was forced to foul to try to stay in the game, but Whitman, Schiffer Anderson and Landen Carter all converted key free throws to hold off the Sailors in the low-scoring game.
