Titusville’s combined girls and boys swim team took home second place overall just behind Oil City at the Southern Tier Invitational last weekend in Grove City. Individually, the girls won first place and the boys took fourth. “The girls got a little revenge,” said coach Seth Come. Earlier in the week they were edged out of a share of the region title after losing to first-place Slippery Rock on February 9. Following that meet, Come said “Slippery Rock came prepared. Congratulations (are) definitely in order because they took care of business.” Bright spots from the meet for Titusville included Addison Bish qualifying for districts in the 100 butterfly. “Luke Keebler was a warrior and swam two extremely difficult races against tremendous competition,” Come said. “I had tasked Luke to try to break up the 1-2-3 sweep in both events. (Keebler) just got out touched for third in the (individual medley) and took third in the fly.” Come said Keebler wasn't feeling 100% and swam two other events. “Very impressed and proud with what Luke accomplished (in that meet).” | Eight & 322 file photos This story was written for the 2-17-2023 Titusville News-Journal See more photos here. |
At the Southern Tier on Saturday, they eked out the win over the other Rockets by two points. “(It was) absolutely a full team effort and we had a lot of good swims across the board,” Come said. The tone was set right off the bat when the medley relay set a new school record. Brooke Kelley, Lauren Ongley, Sophia Sampson and Korryn Schmader beat a 42-year-old school record. The old record was 1:58.41 and this year’s Rockets swam it in 1:57.82. |
“Hannah McQuown had a heck of a day.” She recorded two personal best times. In the 200 freestyle she dropped two seconds, but in the 500 she dropped a whopping 20 seconds. “A goal of hers since last year was to be under 7 minutes, and after coming up short time and time again, she finally annihilated her goal.” Jenna Crocker also put two personal best times in the books. “Her 200 IM was phenomenal, dropping four seconds off her best time. After that race, I knew she was going to have a stellar swim in the 100 breaststroke. That hunch was correct as she swam two seconds faster than her best breast time.” Emma Slocum also qualified for districts in the 500 freestyle. “She swam her season-best time and now gets to train for that district competition where she excelled last season. That also brings our district total up to 11 girls, so Titusville will be represented well at the District 10 Championships.” “Lauren Ongley also had an amazing day, hitting three personal best times.” Besides her record-breaking contribution to the medley relay team, she competed in the 50 freestyle which she doesn’t usually swim but recorded a personal best. In the 100 breaststroke, she beat her district time from last year and is within a stroke or two of the school record. “Sophia Sampson also had a great day. Her individual event scored some major points, but her relay splits were what I want to highlight. She had two personal best relay splits which were instrumental in the record-breaking medley relay and securing the win in the 400 freestyle relay.” |
“And we did just that. The B relay, all coming off the 100 breaststroke with very little rest, all swam personal best times to just out-touch Slippery Rock's B Relay. And the A Relay swam a collective best time, winning the event. They were on fire and only a half a second off the meet record. They were a little disappointed not achieving that goal but all four of them will return next season to have another whack at it.”
Other Personal Bests:
Our depth was a key factor in that win and every (swimmer) did the job they needed to do.” The girls team then took care of business on Monday easily defeating a small Farrell squad. In that meet Korryn Schmader qualified for districts in the 100 Butterfly. |
For the boys team, they beat Slippery Rock on February 9, 106 to 51 to guarantee at least a .500 season and dominated the small Farrell squad 92-0 on February 13. They stand at 7-6 going into their last match against a very strong Franklin team Thursday. At the Southern Tier tournament Joe Herman notched a second place finish in the 100 Butterfly and Alex Reynolds scored a second in the 100 Breast. Those were the team’s highest places. The team came in fourth overall with several strong swims. They scored a fourth place in the 200 Medley Relay. Herman also scored a fourth place in the 200 individual medley. Eric Reynolds also scored a fourth in the 100 breaststroke. They also had two first place finishes in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.
